Cooking gas price drops in Enugu, dealers cite improved supply

The price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, has dropped significantly in Enugu, according to a market survey conducted by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). The survey, carried out on Friday, revealed that many refilling points have reduced their prices, bringing relief to residents.

Reasons for the price reduction

Dealers attribute the price drop to improved domestic supply, lower depot prices, and increased government intervention. Paul Okechukwu, owner of a cooking gas refilling depot at Amechi, Enugu, said the price has fallen compared to June. “In June, the price was between N1,700 and N1,900 per kilogramme. Now it sells between N1,400 and N1,500, depending on the location in Enugu metropolis,” he explained.

Another dealer, Obiora Ani from the Uwani area, noted that the reduction is nationwide. “When you go to other places in the country, the price of cooking gas has reduced as well, not only in Enugu,” he said. Ani credited the government’s quick intervention for the decline and said it has boosted his sales, as many residents are now coming to refill their cylinders.

Residents express relief but call for further cuts

Residents have welcomed the price drop but urge authorities to reduce it further to below N1,000. Nkechi Orji, a hair stylist at Achara Layout, Enugu, said the reduction has decreased her use of firewood. “I now cook most of my food with cooking gas,” she said. “I am still appealing to the authority to further bring down the price. If it comes down further, things will be better for everyone because the high cost of energy is seriously affecting all of us in Nigeria negatively.”

Joy Nwafor, a restaurant owner at Garki, also called on the government to reduce the price further to enable food vendors and restaurant owners to remain in business. The price drop has brought some relief, but many hope for sustained reductions to ease the burden on households and businesses.
