Federal Government Aims to Impact 10,000 Lives with Kwara Mega Farm Estate
The Federal Government, through the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA), has announced that its ongoing Renewed Hope Mega Farm Estate in Ora community, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, is projected to directly benefit over 10,000 residents. Eng. Cornelius Oluwasegun Adebayo, the Chief Executive Officer of NALDA, disclosed this during a recent tour of the multi-million naira project, emphasizing its potential to transform the agricultural landscape and improve livelihoods.
Project Details and Phased Implementation
Adebayo revealed that 5,000 hectares of land have been acquired and cleared for the farm estate, which will be developed in phases to ensure systematic progress. The initiative specifically targets 5,000 farmers, aiming to enhance logistics, trading, and support services within and around the Ora community. He attributed the project's approval to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that the President believes agriculture is the most effective way to reach and uplift people, hence the strategic investment in this sector.
Enhancing Security Through Cluster Farming
A key aspect of the farm estate is its focus on clusterization, which involves grouping farmers into a coordinated and protected environment to address insecurity challenges often faced in rural areas. Adebayo explained that by bringing farmers together rather than leaving them isolated, the project creates an ecosystem that mitigates risks. He assured that security measures will be bolstered with support from the military, police, and local vigilante groups, alongside planned surveillance systems, ensuring a safer farming experience.
Commitment to Agricultural Revitalization
The NALDA boss highlighted that this project reflects President Tinubu's commitment to revitalizing agriculture as a primary driver of economic growth. The administration is focused on modernizing farming practices and making the sector more attractive to young Nigerians, thereby fostering innovation and sustainability. Adebayo noted that the farm estate model is designed not only to boost production but also to serve as a pilot for future expansions across the country once proven successful.
Community and Private Sector Involvement
Community participation is integral to the project's success, with earlier stakeholder sensitization meetings held to engage traditional leaders, local authorities, and residents. Adebayo emphasized that these groups are expected to take ownership by monitoring progress and ensuring transparency, aided by a development structure that reinvests part of the project's benefits into community needs. Additionally, private sector involvement is critical, with an appointed agribusiness firm coordinating farming activities, providing inputs, and managing output. Mechanization support, including tractors and equipment, will be provided under a structured system to ensure long-term sustainability.
Local Endorsement and Future Prospects
Oba Rilwan Aremu Yekini, the traditional ruler of Ora, expressed appreciation for the federal government and stakeholders' efforts in citing the project in his domain, assuring its safety and describing it as a landmark development. He believes this initiative will position Ora as a model for other communities to emulate, showcasing the potential of collaborative agricultural projects to drive regional development and economic empowerment.
