Kano Table Water Producers Announce Price Hike for Sachet Water

The Association of Table Water Producers in Kano State has officially declared an increase in the price of sachet water, commonly referred to as "pure water." This decision comes as a response to mounting production expenses that have placed significant strain on manufacturers throughout the state.

New Pricing Structure and Economic Pressures

According to a statement released by the association's spokesperson, a bag of sachet water that was previously sold for N220 will now carry a minimum price tag of N300. This adjustment represents a substantial rise that directly impacts consumers and retailers alike.

The association attributes this price revision to a sharp escalation in the cost of essential production materials. Producers report that these costs have surged by nearly two-thirds in recent months, creating unsustainable operating conditions for many small-scale manufacturers.

Breakdown of Rising Production Costs

Key factors driving the price increase include:

  • Printing film for packaging now costs approximately N3,700
  • Gas and fuel prices have climbed to around N1,500 per litre
  • Unreliable electricity supply forcing dependence on expensive generator power

The association emphasized that many sachet water factories, particularly those operated as small and medium-scale enterprises, have seen their operational expenses skyrocket due to these market conditions.

Industry Challenges and Quality Assurance

Manufacturers highlighted the persistent challenge of unstable electricity supply as a major factor affecting the sector. The association stated that due to unreliable power, many factories depend heavily on generators to maintain operations, resulting in increased fuel consumption and additional operational costs.

Despite the price adjustment, the association has directed producers to maintain strict quality standards. Operators have been advised to properly maintain reverse osmosis systems and other purification processes used in water treatment to safeguard consumer health.

Regulatory Compliance and Enforcement

The group added that it is collaborating with health authorities to conduct inspections of sachet water production facilities across Kano State. They noted that any producer found violating health regulations or bypassing approved standards will be handed over to relevant law enforcement agencies.

Broader Implications for MSMEs

Industry leaders have warned that without this price review, many sachet water producers could struggle to remain operational. This situation highlights the broader pressures facing micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Nigeria's food and beverage sector, where rising input costs threaten business sustainability.

The association described the price adjustment as a last resort measure to enable producers to continue supplying safe drinking water to residents without shutting down their businesses entirely.
