NIPOST Digital Postcode: 6 Ways to Check Your Home Address Code

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has launched the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, assigning an 11-character alphanumeric code to each addressable building nationwide. The system, introduced on October 1, 2026, allows residents to identify, save, and share precise locations, with searches possible by street address, place name, postcode, or alias.

How to Find Your Digital Postcode

Residents can access the platform via the official website postcode.gov.ng, selecting the “Find my postcode” option. The NIPOST Postcode application is available for download on the website, with the Android version on Google Play and the iOS version listed as coming soon.

Users can search for their home address by entering house numbers, street names, neighbourhoods, or other relevant details. The platform also supports searches by place name, postcode, or alias, with results displayed on a map for verification against nearby roads and landmarks.

Checking Names and Using Location Features

Some address records include homeowners’ names, particularly in areas without clearly defined street names or house numbers. NIPOST Postmaster-General Tola Odeyemi explained that officials collected both standard and informal building addresses during field data gathering. Residents can inspect the address description or search for their name if it is commonly used to identify the property.

For those at home, enabling the phone’s location service and granting the application permission allows users to select “Find My Postcode” to display their position and nearby mapped buildings. Since neighbouring buildings may have different postcodes, users must confirm they have selected the correct property.

Reporting Errors and Understanding the Code

If building details are incorrect, users can use the platform’s correction feature to suggest updates. For buildings without an assigned postcode, residents can request one by providing relevant address and location details, including a Google Maps link, as reported by Punch. NIPOST reviews requests for missing codes and proposed corrections before updating its records.

The postcode identifies a building or addressable location, not an individual resident. People living in the same building can share its postcode, and anyone moving to another building must use the code assigned to the new location. The system aims to improve address identification for deliveries, logistics, emergency response, and public service delivery. According to the official platform, finding, saving, and sharing a digital postcode is free.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Milsat, a Nigerian geospatial technology firm founded by Taslim Saluadeen and Adedamola Baderinwa, built the technology behind the initiative. The system is expected to ease the challenge of locating homes and businesses, connecting them to essential services.
