Ayosifam: A Woman-Led Agribusiness Changing Lives in Kwara State
Ayosifam Integrated Service Ltd, a pioneering woman-led agribusiness operating in Nigeria, is constructing a climate-smart food processing enterprise designed to transform cassava, grains, and sweet potato value chains. This innovative venture simultaneously improves farmer livelihoods and expands access to healthy, gluten-free foods across urban and semi-urban markets.
Founding Vision and Inspiration
The company, strategically located in Kwara State and founded in 2020, was co-founded and is currently led by the visionary entrepreneur Funmilayo Esther Famuyiwa. Her inspiration originated from daily observations during commutes through farming communities, where she witnessed hardworking farmers being exploited by middlemen who purchased their crops at unfairly low prices.
"I witnessed hardworking farmers being exploited by middlemen who bought their crops at unfairly low prices," Famuyiwa explained. "That experience stayed with me. It made me start asking how farmers could have better access, better pricing, and more control over what they produce."
Growth and Farmer Empowerment
Ayosifam commenced operations in 2020 with limited capacity, collaborating with just five farmers and maintaining modest daily production levels. Through persistent effort and relationship-building, the business has significantly expanded its network to approximately fifty smallholder farmers, creating more structured market access and establishing fairer trading relationships.
"When you build with farmers, you are not just running a business you are supporting livelihoods," Famuyiwa emphasized. "We've seen families improve their living conditions because they now have more reliable income."
Product Portfolio and Health Focus
The company's diverse product portfolio includes staple foods such as garri, cassava flour, and fufu flour, alongside a growing range of gluten-free alternatives manufactured from locally sourced crops including rice, plantain, sorghum, and sweet potato. These nutritionally dense products serve both everyday consumers and individuals with specific dietary requirements.
A pivotal moment in the company's development emerged from a deeply personal health experience involving Famuyiwa's father. "During that period, I had to learn how to process sweet potato and other local grains into gluten-free foods," she recalled. "It was not planned as a business decision it started as a necessity."
Following her father's passing, Famuyiwa made a determined commitment to develop additional gluten-free products so other families would not encounter similar challenges.
Sustainable Operations and Circular Economy
Ayosifam integrates sustainability into its core operations through a circular production approach that converts processing by-products into valuable livestock feed. This innovative strategy simultaneously reduces agricultural waste while creating additional economic value within the production system.
The business focuses on three primary objectives:
- Reducing post-harvest losses through improved processing techniques
- Strengthening smallholder farmer networks and market connections
- Delivering nutrient-dense food products to consumers across multiple markets
Building Trust and Overcoming Challenges
Establishing the business required considerable patience, resilience, and consistent relationship-building with initially skeptical farmers. "At the beginning, many farmers were sceptical because of past experiences with middlemen," Famuyiwa noted. "We had to earn their trust by being consistent, paying fairly, and keeping our promises."
Today, Ayosifam continues scaling its operations while maintaining unwavering focus on product quality, affordability, and social impact. The company operates at the intersection of traditional agriculture, modern food processing, and emerging agritech solutions, with increasing emphasis on sustainable production systems.
Future Expansion and Broader Impact
Looking toward the future, Ayosifam aims to expand its farmer network, increase production capacity, and deepen market presence in both local and export markets. The company remains committed to supporting farmers while delivering healthier food options to consumers throughout Nigeria.
"We are building something that goes beyond just processing food," Famuyiwa declared. "It's about creating value across the entire chain from the farmer to the end consumer."
Ayosifam's remarkable growth demonstrates how agribusiness can achieve both commercial viability and substantial social impact within Nigeria's evolving agricultural landscape. By turning cassava, grains, and sweet potato into economic opportunity, this woman-led enterprise is creating meaningful change one product at a time.
