Air Peace to Engage Lagos Government Over Tax Discrepancy Claims
Air Peace airline has declared its readiness to engage with the Lagos State government to address any discrepancies in tax computations, while simultaneously absolving its Chairman, Allen Onyema, and Vice Chairman, Alice Onyema, of allegations of tax evasion. In a statement issued yesterday by the airline's Spokesman, Efe Osifo-Whiskey, Air Peace emphasized its openness to reviewing and reconciling any shortfalls with the state authorities in the interest of transparency, clarity, and due process.
The statement firmly insisted that all personal and corporate tax obligations for both the Onyemas and the airline have been duly met and remain up to date, in full compliance with applicable laws and regulatory requirements. Air Peace expressed surprise and shock at claims that a purported lawsuit had been ongoing since February without any form of service or official communication to the involved parties, highlighting a lack of procedural fairness in the allegations.
Commitment to Integrity and Compliance
Air Peace maintained that its corporate tax responsibilities, along with the personal tax obligations of its top executives, have been fully settled and are current, adhering strictly to all legal and regulatory frameworks. The airline underscored the longstanding contributions of the Onyemas and Air Peace to the growth of Nigeria's aviation sector, emphasizing their unwavering commitment to integrity, resilience, and patriotism.
In the statement, Air Peace reiterated that the airline and its executives remain focused on maintaining high professional standards and will not be distracted from providing safe and reliable services to the flying public. It quoted: "Over the years, the Onyemas and Air Peace have remained committed to the advancement of Nigeria's aviation sector, consistently demonstrating integrity, resilience, and patriotism. These values remain unchanged."
Focus on Aviation Sector Growth
The airline's response comes amid broader discussions on tax compliance and corporate governance in Nigeria's aviation industry. Air Peace highlighted its role in fostering sectoral development, pointing to its consistent efforts in enhancing air travel safety and reliability. The engagement with the Lagos State government is seen as a proactive step to ensure all tax matters are clarified and resolved amicably, without impacting operational excellence.
This development follows recent news of a US-based Nigerian agreeing to a plea deal in a $1.4 million wire fraud and tax evasion case, though Air Peace's situation is distinct and focused on domestic tax reconciliation. The airline's stance reflects a broader industry trend where companies are increasingly prioritizing transparency and regulatory adherence to build public trust and sustain growth in competitive markets.
