Bandits Breach Akure Airport Runway, Prompting Swift Security Response

In a startling security incident on Sunday, suspected bandits invaded the runway area of Akure Airport in Ondo State, causing alarm among airport personnel and local farmers. The breach occurred in the afternoon when farmers working on agricultural lands behind the airport's operational fence suddenly fled towards the runway, shouting for help after sighting armed men on motorcycles approaching their farm.

Immediate Alarm and Coordinated Security Action

The unusual movement near the runway quickly caught the attention of Air Traffic Controllers (ATCs) stationed in the control tower. They immediately raised an alarm and alerted airport security operatives, while also informing the leadership of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA). This prompt action set in motion a coordinated response from multiple security agencies.

Officials from the Nigerian Air Force, the Nigerian Army stationed around the airport, and Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) launched a search operation in the surrounding forest and bush areas. During this operation, security operatives combed the nearby bush and successfully arrested four suspects believed to be linked to the intrusion.

Details of the Arrests and Security Concerns

It was learned that prior to the arrests, security agencies had received a distress call reporting the presence of suspicious individuals around the airport vicinity, particularly behind the airport close to the Eleyewo community. One of the suspects was initially apprehended during the search before additional operatives captured the remaining three in the surrounding forest. The suspects were later handed over to the police for further interrogation at the area command.

In a statement to journalists in Lagos, the Managing Director of FAAN, Olubunmi Kuku, confirmed the incident. She explained that immediately after the incident occurred, the airport authority alerted key security formations, including the Commissioner of Police and the Brigade Commander of the nearby army cantonment. Kuku emphasized that the security agencies, working in collaboration with FAAN's AVSEC unit, carried out a coordinated operation that led to the successful arrest of the suspects.

Addressing Infrastructure Vulnerabilities

Kuku highlighted a critical issue facing many of the country's airports: the lack of operational and perimeter fencing, which makes them porous and easy to penetrate by unscrupulous elements. However, she assured that the Federal Government is accelerating the construction of these facilities to prevent similar occurrences in the future. This incident underscores ongoing challenges in airport security infrastructure across Nigeria.
