Ethiopian Airlines and Boeing have unveiled plans for the acquisition of six B787 Dreamliners, as the carrier fully exercises commitments under its landmark 2023 order. The East African airline stated that it would utilize the B787-9 jets to expand its intercontinental network from Addis Ababa and increase cargo capacity, driven by rising demand for long-haul travel.
CEO Statement
The Group Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines, Mesfin Tasew, described the conversion of options for six B787-9 Dreamliners into a firm order as a proud moment for the airline. “The order demonstrates Ethiopian Airlines’ sustainable growth and preparation for further achievements. By growing our fleet with ultra-modern aircraft such as the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, we are maintaining operational excellence and passenger comfort,” he added.
Fleet and Network
Ethiopian Airlines currently operates Africa’s largest 787 Dreamliner fleet, flying both 787-8 and 787-9 models on intercontinental routes from Addis Ababa to high-demand destinations across Europe, Asia, and North America, as well as key intra-African routes spanning the continent.
Boeing Perspective
Anbessie Yitbarek, Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa at Boeing, expressed pride that Ethiopian Airlines continues to rely on the 787 Dreamliner as the backbone of its fleet as it grows, modernizes operations, opens new routes, and comfortably serves more passengers.
