FAAN Denies Bandit Hijack Attempt at Akure Airport, Confirms Arrests

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has firmly dismissed a viral social media claim alleging that bandits attempted to hijack an airplane at Akure Airport in Ondo State on Sunday. The agency clarified that the incident involved a coordinated security operation resulting in arrests, not a hijack attempt.

Social Media Claim and FAAN's Refutation

The claim originated from an X user, @Admiral_Cyborg, who posted: "While we were busy talking about Nasboi and VDM, bandits tried to hijack a plane in broad daylight, at Akure Airport. Let me rephrase, bandits attempted to seize and take control of a Plane in Ondo State." FAAN responded on X, stating: "There was no part of the press release that mentioned or suggested a 'hijack.' Please refer to the official statement for accurate information." This refutation aimed to correct misinformation and provide clarity on the actual events.

Details of the Security Operation

In an earlier statement, FAAN explained that the arrest of suspects was part of a joint security operation. The operation was triggered by a distress alert about suspicious individuals sighted behind the airport perimeter near the Eleyewo community. A coordinated response involved multiple agencies:

  • FAAN's Aviation Security (AVSEC)
  • Nigerian Air Force (NAF)
  • Nigerian Army
  • Nigeria Police Force (NPF)
  • Local security outfits, including Amotekun and community vigilantes

During the operation, some individuals attempted to flee the area. Four suspects were apprehended by the joint security team and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force Area Command for further interrogation. FAAN commended the swift collaboration among all involved parties, highlighting the effectiveness of the joint efforts in ensuring airport safety.

Implications for Airport Security

The incident has underscored the critical need for enhanced airport perimeter protection across Nigeria. In response, the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and with support from the Presidency under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has accelerated initiatives to improve security infrastructure. According to FAAN, work has already begun in phases to install modern perimeter fencing and upgrade security systems at airports under its control. These measures aim to better secure airports against unlawful access and other potential threats, reinforcing national aviation safety standards.
