Access Bank Plc has advised customers to block their accounts immediately by dialling 901911# from any phone if they suspect their banking details have been compromised. The lender also reminded customers that they can contact Tamada, its 24-hour virtual banking assistant, through the Access More application to report suspicious activity.
Access Bank Warns Against Fake Promotions and Phishing Scams
In a fraud-prevention advisory, Access Bank warned Nigerians about fraudsters who use fake promotions, discounts, gift cards and other online offers to steal sensitive banking details. The bank said criminals may disguise themselves as trusted banks, retailers or businesses to trick unsuspecting customers into revealing confidential information.
“Never share your OTP, CVV, PIN or card details to claim any offer,” the bank warned in its advisory. The lender stressed that unsolicited messages promising rewards or benefits should be treated with caution, especially when the sender requests banking credentials.
Scammers often use attractive deals to create a sense of urgency, convincing victims to click suspicious links or provide information that can expose their accounts. The bank advised customers to verify any suspicious message or promotion through its official communication channels rather than responding directly to unsolicited requests.
How Fraudsters Steal Banking Details
The warning comes as digital payments become increasingly common in Nigeria, with more consumers using cards, mobile banking and electronic channels for shopping, travel bookings and everyday financial activities. While electronic payments offer convenience, the growing reliance on digital platforms has also expanded opportunities for fraudsters.
Fake promotions, phishing messages and impersonation are among the tactics criminals use to obtain sensitive information. Banking credentials such as OTPs, PINs and CVVs are particularly sensitive because they are used to authenticate financial transactions or access accounts.
Customers have been advised to be suspicious of any message, phone call or online offer that asks them to disclose confidential banking information. The bank emphasised that legitimate businesses will never request such details to process a promotion or reward.
Steps to Take If Your Bank Details Are Compromised
Access Bank reminded customers of the steps they can take if they suspect their banking information has been exposed. The lender said customers can block their accounts from any phone by dialling 901911#. Alternatively, customers can contact Tamada, Access Bank's 24-hour virtual banking assistant, through the Access More application.
To use the service, customers should log into the Access More app, select “Support” and then click on “Chat with Tamada.” With online shopping, travel bookings and digital payments becoming increasingly common, the bank urged customers to remain vigilant and verify attractive offers through official channels.
