Dangote Explains London Over Dubai for Cement Listing

Aliko Dangote, Africa's richest man, has explained why his cement company, Dangote Cement Plc, preferred a listing on the London Stock Exchange over Dubai. Speaking at a business forum in Lagos, Dangote cited London's deeper investor base and regulatory environment as key factors.

Why London Was Chosen

Dangote stated that London offers access to a larger pool of institutional investors familiar with the cement industry. He noted that Dubai's market, while growing, lacks the depth for a listing of Dangote Cement's scale. The company plans to raise $1 billion through the IPO, which will be one of the largest on the London exchange this year.

Regulatory and Strategic Considerations

The Nigerian billionaire emphasized that London's regulatory framework provides transparency and investor confidence. He also mentioned that many of the company's existing shareholders are based in Europe, making London a natural choice. Dangote Cement already has a presence in 10 African countries and exports to several others.

According to Dangote, the decision was not about avoiding Nigeria but about accessing global capital markets. He reiterated his commitment to Nigeria, where the company has its largest operations. The IPO is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

Impact on Nigerian Market

Some analysts have expressed concern that the listing overseas could reduce liquidity in the Nigerian stock market. However, Dangote assured that the company will maintain its primary listing on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX). The dual listing strategy aims to attract foreign investment while retaining local investor participation.

The Dangote Cement IPO is anticipated to set a precedent for other Nigerian companies considering international listings. It highlights the growing trend of African firms seeking capital from global markets to fund expansion.
