New Financial Products to Boost Water and Sanitation Access
In a significant development for Nigeria's healthcare infrastructure, Ekondo Microfinance Bank has launched innovative loan products designed to improve access to clean water and sanitation facilities. The initiative, unveiled in Calabar, Cross River State, represents a strategic partnership with Water.org and the National Association of Microfinance Banks (NAMB).
The newly introduced EKWASH and EKPURELYFE loan products fall under the WaterCredit adoption programme, specifically created to support the current administration's efforts to enhance Nigeria's healthcare system through grassroots funding solutions.
Transforming Lives Through Financial Inclusion
During the product launch event, Charles Efedodama, Managing Director of Ekondo Microfinance Bank, emphasized that this initiative goes beyond traditional banking services. "This represents our commitment to improving lives," he stated, highlighting that access to safe water and proper sanitation serves as a fundamental driver of health, dignity, productivity, and economic growth.
The partnership enables Ekondo MFB to expand financial access to households, small businesses, and communities across Cross River State and beyond. Through these specialized loan products, beneficiaries can now invest in essential infrastructure including:
- Water connection systems
- Borehole development
- Toilet facilities
- Hygiene improvement projects
"At Ekondo MFB, our mission has always been to create value and empower people. Today, we are turning that mission into a deeper impact," Efedodama explained during his presentation.
Strategic Partnerships for Maximum Impact
The collaboration brings together specialized expertise from all participating organizations. Water.org contributes technical knowledge in water and sanitation solutions, while NAMB strengthens industry collaboration among microfinance institutions.
Gilbert Okpono, Senior Relationship Account Manager at Water.org, expressed pride in Ekondo Microfinance Bank's initiative. "Today, we're proud of Ekondo Microfinance Bank for the launch of its new WSS loan products," he remarked during the event.
Efedodama commended all stakeholders involved in making the WASH facility a reality, including the bank's partners, board of directors, employees, and other contributors. "Together, we are not just launching a product—we are launching hope, dignity, and a healthier future for all Nigerians," he emphasized.
The initiative specifically aims to benefit families gaining access to clean water, women relieved from time-consuming water collection duties, and children who can maintain regular school attendance due to improved health conditions.
