The Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) has officially launched the YouthCred loan scheme, offering three distinct credit products tailored for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, salaried young professionals, and young entrepreneurs. Eligible Nigerians aged 18 to 39 can access loans ranging from N5,000 to N5 million without the need for collateral or guarantors.
Three Loan Products Under YouthCred
YouthCred is structured into three categories to address the specific needs of different youth segments. The first product, Corper Credit, is exclusively for serving NYSC members. It offers a repayment period of up to six months and includes mandatory financial literacy training. Borrowers who repay on time can access higher loan amounts in subsequent applications.
The second product, Employed Youth Credit, targets salaried workers aged 18 to 39. With a repayment period of up to 12 months, this loan is designed for personal purchases and other financial needs. Timely repayment unlocks larger loan limits.
The third product, Youth Entrepreneurs Credit, is for business owners in the same age bracket. It also offers a 12-month repayment period and can be used for working capital, equipment purchases, or business expansion.
No Collateral, But Financial Education Required
Unlike traditional loans, YouthCred does not require collateral or guarantors. Instead, borrowers must start with small amounts, repay on time, and complete financial education modules to maintain eligibility. CREDICORP emphasizes that approved loans are disbursed within minutes of approval.
Repayments are collected through automatic debit, though early repayment is encouraged as it improves the borrower's credit score and qualifies them for larger facilities in the future. However, defaulting on repayments will reduce the credit score and lower future borrowing limits.
Financial Literacy at the Core
Beyond lending, YouthCred serves as a financial education tool. Participants are advised to borrow only what they need, keep debt levels low, and monitor their credit scores through recognized Nigerian credit bureaus. The initiative is part of CREDICORP's broader mandate to expand responsible consumer lending, especially for young people with limited credit history.
Application and Impact
The application portal is now open for eligible Nigerians. This scheme follows earlier government initiatives like MarketMoni and TraderMoni, which provide zero-interest loans of up to N100,000 to market women and small-scale traders. According to CREDICORP, YouthCred aims to give young Nigerians a structured entry into formal credit while building credit histories for long-term financial access.
