Senate Fast-Tracks Yuguda’s CBN Deputy Governor Confirmation

The Senate has moved swiftly to confirm Lamido Abubakar Yuguda as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), following a streamlined screening process that effectively cleared his path to appointment.

Streamlined Screening Process

Yuguda, nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu last week, was granted the "take a bow and go" privilege by the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions—bypassing the usual round of questioning. The committee is expected to present its report at plenary later today, setting the stage for his formal confirmation.

Committee Deliberations

Although Chairman Adetokunbo Abiru initially proposed engaging the nominee on key monetary and fiscal policy issues, the process took a different turn after Osita Izunaso moved a motion to dispense with questioning. The motion, seconded by Sarafadeen Alli, was anchored on Yuguda’s familiarity with the committee, having previously been screened for top financial positions, including Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Lawmakers said his track record and prior engagements with the Senate made further scrutiny unnecessary. The committee subsequently adopted the motion by voice vote, accelerating the confirmation process in what signals strong legislative backing for the nominee.

With the groundwork now laid, Yuguda’s confirmation by the full Senate appears imminent. This development underscores the Senate’s confidence in Yuguda’s expertise and experience in financial regulation, positioning him to contribute significantly to the CBN’s monetary policy and financial stability objectives.
