Wema Bank Plc, the institution behind Africa's pioneering full digital bank, has officially unveiled a major upgrade to its flagship platform, ALAT by Wema. Announced on 12 January 2026, this enhanced version marks a strategic leap forward, promising a smarter, faster, and more intuitive banking experience for Nigerian customers.
Introducing ALAT: The Evolution
Dubbed 'ALAT: The Evolution', this upgrade fundamentally transforms how users interact with their bank. The platform now integrates several groundbreaking features designed to reduce friction and boost accessibility. A key innovation is the introduction of voice banking, known as SAW. This allows customers to perform a wide range of banking activities using simple, natural voice commands, making digital finance more inclusive.
Another significant addition is the tap and pay functionality, enabling quick, secure, and convenient contactless transactions. Furthermore, the bank has incorporated an uptime prediction feature. This tool enhances transparency and reliability by giving users confidence about the platform's service availability, addressing a common concern in digital services.
Leadership Vision for Smarter Banking
Moruf Oseni, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Wema Bank, emphasized that this launch is more than a routine update. "ALAT: The Evolution is a clear demonstration of our commitment to redefining digital banking in Africa," Oseni stated. He explained that by anticipating the future of finance and listening to customer feedback, the bank has engineered a platform that is smart, intelligent, and dependable.
Oseni also outlined a seamless migration path for users. Existing customers can update their app via the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and log in with their current details. New users simply need to download the app and click 'Get Started' to begin their onboarding journey.
Technology Powering the New Experience
Olusegun Adeniyi, Chief Digital Officer at Wema Bank, shed light on the technological ambition behind the upgrade. "We set out to enhance not just functionality but the overall banking experience," Adeniyi said. The integration of voice banking, contactless payments, and predictive reliability is built on powerful technology that responds intelligently to customer needs in real time.
This move reinforces Wema Bank's position at the forefront of technology-driven financial services in Nigeria. The upgrade is strategically aligned with the bank's long-term vision to create a digital banking ecosystem that is adaptive, intuitive, and consistently available for everyday transactions, work, and life.
