The Ukrainian military has published the monthly salaries of its regulars and officers on its official website, aiming to encourage current soldiers and attract new recruits. The amounts, originally in Ukrainian hryvnia, have been converted to Nigerian naira for easier comprehension by Nigerian audiences.
Base Pay for Regular Soldiers
According to the Ukrainian military website, the starting monthly salary for recruits or regular soldiers is 20,000 Ukrainian hryvnia (UAH). When converted to Nigerian naira, this equals N615,685. This means a regular soldier in the Ukrainian military earns over N600,000 per month as base pay.
Officer Salaries and Additional Compensation
Officers in the Ukrainian military, who hold senior positions compared to regulars, receive higher base salaries. The monthly salary for an officer starts at 25,000 UAH, which translates to N769,606.63 in Nigerian currency.
Beyond base pay, personnel are entitled to combat remuneration. This additional pay can exceed 30,000 UAH (N923,527) per month, depending on the mission and assignment location. Soldiers posted to certain high-risk areas receive even higher amounts, as explained on the website.
Comparison with Nigerian Army Salaries
In a similar disclosure, the Nigerian Army's salary structure shows significantly lower figures. A Private in the Nigerian Army earns approximately N104,500 monthly, while a Major General receives about N1,150,500. Salaries increase with rank, but the Ukrainian base pay for regulars is nearly six times higher than a Nigerian Private's salary.
Global Military Salary Transparency Trend
The Ukrainian military follows a trend seen in other nations. The UK military has published annual salaries for its personnel, with recruits and privates earning about N49.8 million yearly, lance corporals N64.4 million, corporals N74.8 million, and sergeants N83.9 million after conversion from pounds. The Singapore Army also disclosed monthly salaries: Officer Cadets earn between N3.9 million and N8.4 million, while Second Lieutenants and Lieutenants receive N4.2 million to N9 million after conversion from Singapore dollars.
This transparency aims to motivate troops and attract new volunteers by clearly outlining financial benefits. The Ukrainian military's move is part of broader efforts to maintain morale amid ongoing conflict.
