Eko DisCo Warns Against Meter Scams, Says Free Prepaid Meters Only Via Official Portal
Eko DisCo: Free Meters Only Through Official Portal

Eko Electricity Distribution Company (Eko DisCo) has issued a crucial warning to its customers, advising them to only access the ongoing free prepaid meter programme through the company's official online channels. The utility firm strongly cautioned against engaging with third-party agents who may demand payment, emphasising that the meters under the government-backed Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) Tranche B scheme are completely free of charge.

Community Forum Highlights Transparency and Free Meter Access

The message was delivered directly to the community during the Eko DisCo Customer Engagement Forum for the Apapa District. The event took place on Thursday, 27 November 2025, at the Rockview Hotel in Apapa. This forum is a key part of the company's strategy to foster transparency, improve community relations, and tackle persistent issues like erratic power supply, metering delays, and energy theft.

The gathering saw a significant turnout, bringing together community leaders, business owners, security officials, and local residents. The traditional institution was represented by His Royal Highness Oba Moroof Oyekunle Atanda Amodu-Tijani Oluwa (Amore III) of Iwa and Apapa Kingdom. Senior police officers, including ACP Onwuamaegbu Onyinye and CSP Uche Gabriel, were also present, underscoring the collaborative effort required to protect power infrastructure from vandalism and theft.

Management Reiterates Commitment to Service Improvement

Speaking on behalf of the Managing Director and CEO, the General Manager of Corporate Communications, Babatunde Lasaki, thanked residents for their patience as the company executes projects to enhance electricity supply in the district. He stated that forums like this provide customers with direct access to senior management, allowing their feedback to directly influence operational decisions.

Lasaki detailed ongoing investments in network upgrades, transformer maintenance, and feeder rehabilitation. He assured the community that Eko DisCo remains dedicated to better service delivery, despite challenges originating from the national grid. All concerns raised by residents, he promised, would be addressed promptly.

Technical Team Warns Against Scams and Illegal Connections

During a technical session, the Head of Distribution Operations, Henry Ukoh, provided updates. He confirmed that Eko DisCo has accelerated the deployment of free meters under both the MAF Tranche B and its internal metering initiatives. This has enabled thousands of customers in Apapa, Badia, Ajegunle, Ajeromi, and Wharf Road to receive meters at no cost.

Ukoh issued a stern warning: "Customers should not pay anyone claiming to fast-track their meter application." He stressed that the only legitimate path to a free meter is through the company's official online portal. He also highlighted the severe dangers of illegal connections, which overload the network, cause transformer failures, and create unsafe environments. Residents were urged to report suspicious activities and avoid unqualified electricians.

To improve service, Eko DisCo encouraged the use of its digital platforms for lodging complaints, noting that online submissions ensure faster responses and better tracking. The company also announced a new weekly radio programme on Nigeria Info FM, airing every Wednesday at 4:30 p.m., to keep customers informed on metering, safety, and other operational issues.

The interactive segment of the forum saw residents voice worries over power fluctuations, transformer upkeep, and infrastructure vandalism. Security officials pledged continued cooperation with the DisCo to combat cable theft and attacks on power assets.

In his closing remarks, Lasaki reaffirmed Eko DisCo's commitment to providing safe, reliable, and transparent electricity services. He confirmed that feedback from the Apapa forum would directly shape the company's operational priorities in the coming months.
