Gas Tanker Explosion Triggers Major Power Outage in Lagos Communities
A significant power outage has impacted several Lagos communities following a devastating gas tanker explosion on the Lekki-Epe Expressway, which occurred early on Saturday, March 21. The incident has left residents in areas such as Medallion Company, Sangotedo, Majek, Awoyaya, Eputu, Lakowe, Lasoro, Fidiso to Kolajo, and Elemoro Police Station without electricity, disrupting daily life and causing widespread inconvenience.
Details of the Tragic Accident
The explosion resulted from a collision between a gas tanker and a tipper truck, leading to a massive fire that caused extensive damage. According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the accident happened at 02:36 a.m. when a speeding 20-tonne tipper truck from the Epe end rammed into a stationary 30-tonne gas truck that had failed to pull over from the highway. This collision ignited a fierce blaze that spread rapidly to three adjoining warehouses and ten roadside shops, including a gym and a generator house, before firefighters managed to extinguish it.
Tragically, two individuals were killed in the incident. The tipper driver and his assistant, both male adults, were recovered burnt beyond recognition, while the gas truck driver reportedly escaped unhurt. Additionally, properties worth thousands of naira were destroyed, and vehicles including three Sienna buses, one Toyota Corolla car, and a forklift parked nearby were severely damaged.
Impact on Power Infrastructure
The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) confirmed the power outage in a statement released on Saturday. The company explained that the fire caused significant damage to critical electrical infrastructure, specifically affecting the Ibeju and Medallion 33kV feeders. Key conductors and overhead line equipment were compromised, leading to the disruption of power supply in the affected communities.
In a post on its X handle, EKEDC stated, "Please be informed that the current power outage was caused by a fire incident that occurred last night following a vehicle collision with a stationary gas tanker. The resulting fire led to significant damage to the Ibeju and Medallion 33kV feeders, including critical conductors and overhead line equipment. This unexpected incident has disrupted the power supply in the affected areas. Our technical team is working diligently to replace the damaged components and restore power supply as quickly and safely as possible. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused by this unforeseen incident and thank you."
Response and Recovery Efforts
Although the fire service reported that the situation was brought under control, the aftermath has posed significant challenges for both emergency services and utility providers. EKEDC's technical teams are actively engaged in repair work to replace the damaged components and restore electricity as swiftly as possible. Residents in the impacted areas are advised to expect delays in power restoration due to the extent of the damage.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety and infrastructure resilience in Lagos, particularly on busy expressways like Lekki-Epe. Authorities are likely to review safety protocols to prevent similar tragedies in the future, as communities grapple with the immediate effects of the outage and the broader implications for public safety.
