Nigerian Woman Embraces Self-Reliance with Solar and Starlink Setup
A young Nigerian lady has successfully liberated herself from the persistent challenges of power outages and unreliable network connectivity by investing in a personal energy and communication solution. She installed six solar panels and acquired Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet service, utilizing her personal savings to fund the entire project.
Social Media Announcement and Installation Process
The woman shared her journey on social media, posting updates that captured the installation process. On February 14, she posted a photo showing an engineer connecting wires during the setup of the solar batteries, accompanied by the caption: "Almost there. My savings is saving me." This followed an earlier post on February 10 where she humorously remarked, "On my way to touch my savings" and expressed frustration with the national power supply, stating, "NEPA abi EEDC have done enough!!!"
Completion and Cost Revelation
After the installation was completed, she announced, "Finally done!!!" and detailed her motivation, citing a severe network issue that hindered her work for a client. She explained, "I had the worst episode of bad network on Thursday. I was trying to post content on Instagram for a client. I switched from MTN to Airtel, then to 9mobile, and still couldn’t post for more than an hour." She now feels "90% free from the shackles of mobile network and NEPA," describing the achievement as both sweet and emotional.
When inquired about the total expenditure by a correspondent, she disclosed that the entire project cost 2.7 million naira, covering both the solar system and Starlink purchase and installation.
Public Reactions and Broader Context
The post garnered widespread attention and congratulations from social media users. Comments ranged from celebratory messages like "Congratulations dear. Bye Bye to bad network and Nepa issues" to more critical remarks about citizens having to provide basic amenities themselves. One user noted, "Citizens providing basic amenities for themselves and asked to pay taxes. Sad!" while others offered practical advice, such as learning power management from the installer.
This story echoes similar trends in Nigeria, where individuals are increasingly turning to alternative energy sources. For instance, a Nigerian crypto expert previously shared his positive experience with a 15kWh solar battery, and a young man reported installing two solar panels for 33,000 naira, highlighting a growing movement toward self-sufficiency amid infrastructure challenges.
