Oando Explores Biodegradable Plastics Amid Environmental Concerns
Oando Clean Energy Limited (OECL) has launched a groundbreaking biodegradable technology for single-use plastics in Nigeria, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Environment. This initiative aims to combat the nation's escalating plastic pollution crisis by promoting advanced biodegradable solutions tailored to local needs.
Workshop Highlights Government and Industry Collaboration
A one-day workshop held on Thursday in Abuja brought together key stakeholders, including government regulators and industry leaders, to discuss the scalable adoption of biodegradable technologies. The event, hosted at the Federal Ministry of Environment in Maitama, featured prominent figures such as Minister of Environment Mallam Balarabe Abbas Lawal, who emphasized the severe environmental and agricultural threats posed by plastic waste.
Minister Lawal warned that plastic pollution adversely affects waterways, soil quality, livestock health, and the broader ecosystem, underscoring the urgent need for innovative solutions. Other attendees included Director II of Pollution Control and Environmental Health Omotunde Adeola, Representative of the Commissioner of Environment and Climate Change for Kano State Dr. Umar Saleh Anka, Vice President of Business and Opportunity Maturation at Oando Clean Energy Limited Hadiza Adukonu, and Director of Pollution Control and Environmental Health Dr. Bahijjahtu Abubakar.
Innovative Technology Showcased for Nigerian Conditions
During the workshop, Andrew Webster, Chief Strategy Officer of Polymateria, demonstrated the company's Biotransformation technology. This innovative approach utilizes environmental triggers such as sunlight, heat, and humidity to accelerate the degradation of plastics, making it compatible with existing recycling systems and well-suited to Nigeria's climatic conditions.
Stakeholders engaged in comprehensive policy discussions, technical sessions, and breakout groups, focusing on establishing standards, enforcement mechanisms, and implementation pathways to ensure nationwide adoption of biodegradable solutions. Dr. Bahijjahtu Abubakar called for enhanced collaboration among all parties to advance research, adopt frameworks, and localize biodegradable technologies effectively.
Commitment to Sustainable Progress and Cross-Sector Partnerships
Vice President Hadiza Adukonu of Oando Clean Energy emphasized the importance of ongoing dialogue and collaboration across the value chain to sustain momentum and achieve lasting environmental benefits. Oando Clean Energy reaffirmed its dedication to leading cross-sector partnerships that deliver scalable environmental solutions, supporting Nigeria's transition toward a more sustainable and eco-friendly future.
This initiative represents a significant step forward in addressing plastic pollution, aligning with global sustainability goals and local environmental priorities. By leveraging biodegradable technology, Oando and its partners aim to mitigate the harmful impacts of single-use plastics, fostering a cleaner and healthier environment for all Nigerians.
