Suspected Power Installation Vandal Electrocuted in Enugu Substation
A yet-to-be-identified individual suspected of vandalising electricity facilities belonging to MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) was electrocuted on Tuesday morning in Enugu, according to company officials. The incident occurred at the Akonobi 500KVA Distribution Substation, located along Independence Avenue in Independence Layout, Enugu.
Details of the Fatal Incident
Emeka Ezeh, the Head of Communications for MEDL, described the event as "unfortunate" and confirmed that the lifeless body of the suspected vandal was discovered within the substation premises. Ezeh explained that the deceased, along with accomplices, had reportedly managed to loosen two intermediate cables from the substation and was in the process of removing a third cable when the electricity supply was unexpectedly restored, leading to his immediate electrocution.
It is presumed that the deceased did not act alone, as two of the vandalised intermediate cables were missing from the scene, indicating that his accomplices had fled with them. Ezeh expressed deep concern over the escalating rate of vandalism targeting electricity infrastructure within the network, highlighting that such criminal activities not only severely impact the company's revenue but also adversely affect the quality of service delivered to customers.
Company's Appeal for Vigilance
Ezeh urged customers to remain vigilant and collaborate closely with the company to prevent vandalism, which causes significant inconvenience and service disruptions. He emphasised that vandalism remains a major challenge that cannot be effectively addressed without the active support of customers, who are critical stakeholders in the power distribution ecosystem.
"It is a battle we must all fight collectively because once these installations are vandalised, customers served by them are severely impacted," Ezeh stated. He added, "It is hoped that the death of this young man, who paid the ultimate price with his life, will serve as a deterrent to others involved in such criminal activities."
Aftermath and Police Involvement
The remains of the electrocuted suspect have been evacuated by officers of the Nigerian Police and deposited at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) morgue for further investigation and identification. This tragic incident underscores the dangerous consequences of tampering with high-voltage electricity infrastructure and the ongoing efforts to combat vandalism in the region.
