President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday commissioned Africa's first Renewable Energy College and a Green Hydrogen Plant in Kogi State, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria's clean energy transition.
The facilities, located in the Obajana area of Kogi, are part of a larger initiative to boost the nation's renewable energy capacity by 20% by 2030, according to the Ministry of Power.
What Happened
The commissioning ceremony took place at the project site, with President Tinubu unveiling a plaque and inspecting the facilities. The Renewable Energy College is set to train at least 5,000 engineers and technicians annually in solar, wind, and hydrogen technologies.
The Green Hydrogen Plant, the first of its kind in Africa, is expected to produce 5,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, which will be used to power industries and transportation, reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 150,000 tonnes annually.

Speaking at the event, President Tinubu said, "This project is a testament to our commitment to a sustainable future. It will create jobs, drive innovation, and position Nigeria as a leader in renewable energy on the continent."
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, noted that the project was delivered in partnership with a consortium of international investors and the Kogi State Government, with an investment of $500 million.
Impact on Nigeria
The college will offer certification courses in partnership with international universities, and the plant will supply clean energy to the national grid and local industries, potentially reducing electricity costs by 15%.
Governor Usman Ododo of Kogi State praised the initiative, saying, "This is a historic day for our state. The benefits will be felt for generations, from job creation to improved energy access."
Future Prospects
The project aligns with Nigeria's Energy Transition Plan and is expected to attract further investments in the sector. The government plans to replicate this model in other regions, aiming to establish at least five more renewable energy colleges by 2030.
Stakeholders have welcomed the development, noting that it will enhance energy security and support the country's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060.
