Yobe State Government Secures $5 Million World Bank Grant for Solar-Powered Projects
The Yobe State Government has successfully secured a $5 million grant from the World Bank, equivalent to approximately N7 billion, to execute solar-powered projects across six critical health and educational institutions in the state. This initiative aims to provide rooftop Solar Photovoltaic (PV) power supplies, enhancing service delivery and supporting sustainable development.
Announcement and Partnership Details
Over the weekend in Damaturu, Dr. Mustapha Abba Geidam, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Energy (MoTE), announced the release of the World Bank grant. He explained that the grant was secured following a partnership initiated by Governor Mai Mala Buni between the Federal Rural Electrification Agency (FREA) and the World Bank. Geidam emphasized that the solar projects are designed to improve efficient service delivery in the benefitting institutions, contributing to the state's long-term development goals.
Benefitting Institutions and Project Scope
The six institutions set to benefit from this electrification intervention include four healthcare facilities and two educational institutions. Specifically, the projects will cover:
- Specialists and General Hospitals in Potiskum, Buni-Yadi, Geidam, and Nguru.
- Umar Suleiman College of Education (USCE) in Nguru.
- Yobe State University (YSU) in Damaturu.
Geidam highlighted that the primary objective is to address persistent challenges such as unreliable electricity supplies and the escalating costs of diesel required to power over a dozen generators at these sites. He lamented that epileptic power supplies have significantly hindered healthcare delivery services, underscoring the urgency of this initiative.
Benefits and Implementation Strategy
The installation of solar PV systems is expected to provide clean, reliable, and cost-effective energy, leading to uninterrupted services, reduced operational costs, and environmental sustainability for the state economy. Geidam noted that this solar power initiative followed a comprehensive feasibility study and energy needs assessment, which confirmed the structural suitability of most buildings for rooftop solar installations. Provisions have also been made for ground-mounted systems in areas where they are critically needed within the six institutions.
Project Documentation and Next Steps
A detailed project document has been formally submitted to Engr. Abba Aliyu, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Yobe Rural Electrification Agency (YOREA), by Dr. Mustapha Abba Geidam on behalf of the Yobe State Government. This submission is for immediate consideration and implementation of the World Bank-funded projects, ensuring timely execution and impact.
Leadership and Commitment
This achievement underscores the visionary leadership and unwavering commitment of the Buni administration towards transforming the energy landscape of Yobe State. By improving the welfare of citizens and positioning Yobe as a model for renewable energy adoption in Nigeria, the government aims to set a precedent for sustainable development. The Yobe State Government has expressed its appreciation to the World Bank and the Rural Electrification Agency for their partnership and support, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring the successful implementation of this impactful project.
