President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a strong appeal to young Nigerians, urging them to remain in the country and actively participate in its development. He delivered this message during his Democracy Day address on Friday, June 12, emphasizing national commitment and the role of youth in building the nation's future.
Tinubu's Direct Appeal to the Youth
In his speech, Tinubu told young people that Nigeria is their home and their future, and he called on them to take active roles in strengthening the economy and democratic system. He specifically urged them to "build here, code here, work here, and vote here." The President stressed that national progress is driven by those who stay to solve problems, not by those who abandon their country.
His remarks directly address the growing trend of migration among young Nigerians seeking better opportunities abroad, a phenomenon widely known as "japa." Many young people have been leaving due to unemployment, inflation, and concerns about living conditions. Tinubu's message aims to counter this movement by encouraging confidence in local opportunities and national reforms.
Reforms and Economic Improvements
Tinubu highlighted his administration's efforts to expand jobs, support innovation, and improve economic conditions. He pointed to reforms in technology, agriculture, and infrastructure as key sectors creating opportunities for young people. While acknowledging ongoing economic pressures, he maintained that current policies are designed to deliver long-term stability and growth. He also emphasized that democracy should be judged not only by elections and political freedom but also by improvements in living standards.
Encouraging Civic Participation
The President used the occasion to encourage young Nigerians to take voting seriously and engage more actively in democratic processes. He stated that their involvement is essential for national progress. Other parts of the Democracy Day address focused on national security, economic reforms, and infrastructure development, but the message directed at young Nigerians stood out as one of the most direct appeals in the speech.
Tinubu on Constructive Criticism and Security
Earlier, Tinubu encouraged Nigerians to freely criticize his administration, provided such engagement remains constructive and rooted in faith in Nigeria's democratic future. He also issued a strong warning to bandits, kidnappers, and terror sponsors, stating that they must surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian state. He stressed that the government will no longer tolerate attacks on civilians and that surrender opportunities for criminals are temporary.
