SON Urges Nigerian Manufacturers to Adopt Standards for Global Market Competitiveness
The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has issued a strong appeal to local businesses and manufacturers across the country, emphasizing the critical need to prioritize the production of standard-compliant products. This initiative aims to significantly boost the competitiveness of Nigerian-made goods in the global marketplace, aligning with broader national efforts to increase exports and reduce the country's heavy reliance on imports.
Director-General's Call for Adherence to Industrial Standards
Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunoso Okeke, the Director-General of SON, made this urgent call during the official product listing ceremony of Green Conversion and Assembly Limited (G-CAL) in Kwara State. Represented by the Kwara State coordinator, Oyepo AbdulRazaq, Dr. Okeke underscored the fundamental importance of adhering to established industrial standards. He explained that certified products not only guarantee excellent value for money but also possess the necessary quality to compete effectively on an international scale.
"Adopting and maintaining high standards is non-negotiable for our local industries," Dr. Okeke stated through his representative. "When our products meet rigorous quality, safety, and value benchmarks, they build unwavering consumer confidence. This, in turn, encourages Nigerians to support and patronize locally-made goods, creating a virtuous cycle of economic growth and self-reliance."
G-CAL's Milestone and the Path to MANCAP Certification
During the event, it was disclosed that Green Conversion and Assembly Limited (G-CAL) holds the distinction of being the first company of its kind to achieve such a product listing in Kwara State. Dr. Okeke urged the manufacturers to maintain strict compliance with all relevant standards to qualify for the prestigious Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP) certification.
He further elaborated on the mechanisms supporting this drive, explaining that a robust product identification scheme is essential. This system uniquely identifies products through specific codes, labels, or markings, ensuring traceability and authenticity in the market.
Industry Perspectives and Future Goals
Also speaking at the ceremony, Ibukunolu Alasan, an assistant chief technical officer at SON, commended the organization for its developmental strides in promoting standardization. However, he noted that considerable work remains to be done to elevate Nigeria's manufacturing sector to global parity.
In response, Bello Kamaldeen, the manager of Kiowope Nig. Ltd, shared insights into his company's progress. "We have already begun exporting our products to other states within Nigeria," Kamaldeen said. "Our immediate goal is to expand regionally across Africa, with the ultimate ambition of reaching international markets. We are grateful for SON's unwavering support and are fully committed to attaining MANCAP certification to validate our quality and open new doors for export."
This collective push by SON and industry stakeholders highlights a strategic move to fortify Nigeria's economic foundations by ensuring that locally manufactured goods are not only consumed domestically but also celebrated and demanded worldwide.
