Nigerian Navy Apprehends Two Stowaways on Foreign Vessel Off Lagos Coast
The Nigerian Navy has made a significant arrest, detaining two suspected stowaways from a foreign merchant vessel off the Lagos coast for attempting to leave the country illegally. This operation underscores ongoing efforts to combat irregular migration and secure Nigeria's maritime borders.
Details of the Arrest and Handover
The suspects, identified as Abdullahi Yakubu, aged 36, and Omoniyi Afotona, aged 25, were arrested on March 19, 2026, by operatives of the NNS BEECROFT. They were subsequently handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) at Apapa on Monday. Commander NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, oversaw the handover, emphasizing the seriousness of the offense.
During routine security checks near the Lagos Fairway Buoy, the suspects were discovered inside the rudder compartment of MV Seaspan Lahore. Preliminary findings indicate that they illegally boarded the vessel at Apapa Port in a bid to travel abroad undetected. Adams-Aliu highlighted that stowing away is not only illegal but also poses severe life-threatening risks, urging families and community leaders to educate youths on the dangers of irregular migration.
Navy's Commitment and Legal Consequences
Commodore Adams-Aliu reaffirmed the Navy's unwavering commitment to securing Nigeria's maritime domain, in alignment with directives from the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas. He issued a stern warning, noting that one of the suspects was a repeat offender and that the Nigerian Navy will not tolerate any form of illegality in the waterways.
Upon receiving the suspects, Deputy Superintendent of Immigration (DSI) Emmanuel Ochokpa Eneji, attached to the Lagos Ports Marine Command, stated that they would be profiled, documented, and handed over to the police for prosecution. This process ensures that legal actions are taken to deter future incidents.
Suspect's Confession and Motivations
Abdullahi Yakubu admitted to being a repeat offender, expressing desperation to move to Spain in search of a better livelihood. He revealed that he had attempted to stow away approximately a year ago but was arrested, leading him to try a second time. According to his statement, he chose this illegal route due to a lack of funds for lawful migration, paying only a small token to some fishermen who assisted him in boarding the vessel.
This case highlights the broader issues of economic hardship and the risks individuals take in pursuit of opportunities abroad. The Nigerian Navy's proactive measures aim to curb such activities and promote safer, legal migration pathways.
