Navy Intercepts 42,000 Litres of Diesel, Arrests Five Suspects in Ondo State Operation
Operatives of the Nigerian Navy stationed in Igbokoda, located within Ilaje Local Council of Ondo State, have successfully intercepted a shipment of 42,000 litres of suspected refined petroleum products and apprehended five individuals involved in the illicit activity. The operation, conducted along the Igbokoda axis, targeted a vessel believed to be transporting Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel, which was seized by personnel from the Forward Operating Base (FOB).
Intelligence-Driven Maritime Crackdown
Captain Andy Alemongwa, the Commanding Officer of FOB Igbokoda, detailed that the interception was the result of actionable intelligence gathered by naval personnel across multiple locations, including the Awoye area. This intelligence enabled the operatives to track and detain a vessel suspected of carrying illegally-refined products, along with a fiber boat utilized in the operation. Captain Alemongwa emphasized that this arrest underscores the Navy's unwavering commitment under the leadership of Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, whose command philosophy enforces a zero-tolerance stance against crude oil theft, illegal bunkering, and other maritime offenses.
Government and Community Efforts to Combat Illegal Activities
Captain Alemongwa further explained that both federal and state authorities have ramped up initiatives to curb illegal petroleum dealings, particularly in riverine communities. These efforts include vocational training programs designed to offer alternative livelihoods for youths, reducing their reliance on illicit activities. He highlighted the collaborative roles of interventionist agencies such as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC), which work alongside state-led programs focused on community engagement and economic empowerment to address root causes of crime.
Call for Public Advocacy and Enhanced Security Measures
The naval commander urged residents to actively advocate against illegal operations, warning that security agencies remain resolute in enforcing maritime laws. He stressed the importance of a "whole-of-society" approach, noting that local informants and surveillance networks were instrumental in the successful tracking and arrest of the suspects. Captain Alemongwa cautioned that individuals engaged in illegal activities in the region will face apprehension, as security presence and intelligence operations have been significantly bolstered. He also expressed gratitude for the support from Rear Admiral Abubakar Mustapha, the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, describing it as a critical factor in sustaining operational momentum in the area.
