Josien Mercantile Ltd has officially ended its role as the Nigerian distributor for the Rémy Cointreau portfolio, a decision driven by a sustained decline in cognac demand and a pivot toward more dynamic spirits categories. The company confirmed the termination on 2 October 2026, with formal notice given to Rémy Cointreau on 30 July 2026.
Strategic Review Leads to Portfolio Shift
The move followed a comprehensive review of both the Nigerian and global spirits markets conducted by Josien's Board of Directors. The review identified a persistent softening in consumer demand for cognac, both within Nigeria and internationally. As a result, Josien will redirect its investment toward spirits categories where consumer demand is currently growing.
According to the Leadership team: “This was a considered decision, and not one we took lightly. A strong distribution business must follow where consumer demand is going and focus its investment where it can create the greatest value for our customers, trade partners and shareholders. We are grateful to the Rémy Cointreau team for their professionalism and partnership, and we wish the brands continued success in Nigeria.”
Josien's Longstanding Market Commitment
Founded in 1977, Josien has spent nearly five decades building routes to market for international brands in Nigeria and across West Africa. The company entered the wines and spirits sector in 1983 and has since represented some of the world's most respected houses. This long-term commitment to the African market remains unchanged.
Throughout the transition, Josien says it remains fully committed to its customers and trade partners, and will continue to support existing customers on current orders and remaining stock. The company is continuing to invest in its portfolio and in the market it has served since 1977, and plans to announce new brand partnerships in the coming months.
