The Nigerian equities market continued its downward trajectory on Thursday, August 17, 2026, as the bears maintained their grip for the fifth consecutive trading session. Investors witnessed a significant erosion of wealth, with the market capitalization of listed equities declining by N106.24 billion, according to data from the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX).
Market Indices and Capitalization Decline
The All-Share Index (ASI), the benchmark index of the NGX, fell by 0.18% to close at 102,344.56 points, down from the previous close of 102,530.80 points. Similarly, the market capitalization of all listed equities dropped to N58.68 trillion, representing a loss of N106.24 billion from the N58.78 trillion recorded at the end of the previous trading day.
The persistent sell-offs were driven by profit-taking activities in some of the heavyweight stocks, including MTN Nigeria Communications, Airtel Africa, and Dangote Cement. These stocks, which have significant weightings in the index, contributed majorly to the market's negative performance.
Sectoral Performance and Top Losers
Across the sectors, the NGX Banking index, NGX Consumer Goods index, and NGX Oil & Gas index all recorded declines, reflecting the broad-based nature of the sell-off. However, the NGX Insurance index and NGX Industrial Goods index showed some resilience, posting marginal gains.
In terms of individual stocks, the market recorded 25 losers against 18 gainers, indicating a bearish sentiment among investors. The top losers included MTN Nigeria, which shed 1.85% to close at N212.60 per share, and Airtel Africa, which declined by 2.10% to close at N2,330.00 per share. Dangote Cement also lost 1.50% to close at N420.00 per share.
On the flip side, some stocks defied the bearish trend. The top gainers included FBN Holdings, which appreciated by 3.85% to close at N26.95 per share, and Stanbic IBTC Holdings, which gained 2.90% to close at N72.00 per share. These gains, however, were not enough to offset the losses in the larger-cap stocks.
Investors' Sentiment and Market Outlook
Investors' sentiment remained cautious as the market continued to experience volatility amid concerns over rising interest rates and inflationary pressures. According to analysts at Lagos-based investment firm, Meristem Securities, the market's bearish run is likely to persist in the short term as investors reposition their portfolios ahead of the upcoming earnings season.
"The market is currently in a corrective phase, with investors taking profits after a strong rally earlier in the year. We expect the market to consolidate in the near term, with selective buying opportunities emerging in fundamentally sound stocks," said analysts at Meristem Securities in their daily market commentary.
The market's performance this week has been particularly weak, with the ASI declining by 0.65% so far, while the market capitalization has shed N376.5 billion. This negative trend is in contrast to the positive performance recorded in the previous week, when the market gained N1.2 trillion.
Impact on Investors and the Economy
The sustained bearish run has raised concerns among retail and institutional investors, as the value of their portfolios continues to shrink. The loss of N106.24 billion in a single day brings the total market capitalization loss for the five-day losing streak to over N500 billion.
However, market analysts note that the current correction is a healthy development, as it provides an opportunity for investors to enter the market at lower valuations. They advise investors to focus on fundamentally strong companies with good dividend yields and growth prospects.
As the market continues to navigate these turbulent times, all eyes will be on the monetary policy decisions of the Central Bank of Nigeria and the release of corporate earnings for the first half of 2026, which are expected to provide direction for the market in the coming weeks.
