Tax Expert Kelechi Ibe Reveals How Compliance Unlocks Capital for Nigerian Businesses
In an exclusive interview, Kelechi Ibe, co-founder of the tax compliance platform TaxStreem, shared insights into Nigeria's evolving tax landscape and the critical role of proper record-keeping in unlocking millions in capital for businesses. With over a decade of experience in tax law and advisory, Ibe's journey highlights the transformative potential of technology in addressing compliance challenges.
Professional Journey and Entry into Taxation
Kelechi Ibe graduated from the University of Uyo as the 3rd Best Graduating Student in the Faculty of Law and earned a 2nd Class Upper degree from the Nigerian Law School in 2016. His career began with litigation in Awka, Anambra State, before he transitioned into taxation by chance. After struggling to secure a position in top Lagos law firms post-NYSC, he joined KPMG in 2018, where he was introduced to tax compliance and structuring.
Ibe later moved to Udo Udoma & Belo-Osagie (UUBO) in 2021, rising to Senior Associate by 2023. In 2024, he was selected by International Lawyers for Africa (ILFA) for a secondment in London, working with firms like Latham & Watkins. This experience exposed him to AI in legal practice, sparking the idea for TaxStreem. His accolades include being named a Rising Star for Corporate Tax by World Tax and winning the "Lawyer of the Year" award at the CEOs Network Africa Under 30s in 2022.
Shaping Tax Understanding Through Leading Institutions
At KPMG, Ibe handled VAT and WHT compliance, tax structuring, due diligence, and dispute resolution, gaining foundational training in tax and accounting. At UUBO, he focused on transaction advisory, contributing to major deals like Universal Music's acquisition of Mavin Music and GSK's demerger from Haelon. These roles taught him diligence, commercial thinking, and risk management, emphasizing that no two tax assignments are alike.
Assessment of Nigeria's Tax Reforms
Ibe views Nigeria's recent tax reforms as steps in the right direction. He advocates for widening the tax net, fairer contributions from foreign companies, and technology-driven administration. Key points include exempting low-income earners, supporting struggling businesses, tying incentives to productivity, and ensuring government accountability. While the reforms show promise, Ibe stresses that successful implementation is crucial for their impact.
Barriers to Tax Compliance for Nigerian Businesses
The biggest barriers include the high cost of compliance, limited access to clear information, lack of trust in government due to poor accountability, and the complexity of tax processes. Unlike developed countries where technology simplifies compliance, Nigeria's systems are difficult to navigate, even for professionals, hindering businesses from staying compliant.
Common Misconceptions About Taxes
Many business owners mistakenly believe that small or tax-exempt entities have no filing obligations. In reality, all businesses must file annual income tax returns, regardless of tax liability. Additionally, VAT and WHT compliance is mandatory for a wide range of businesses, with non-compliance leading to penalties and issues obtaining Tax Clearance Certificates (TCCs). Another misconception is treating VAT and WHT as revenue; businesses must remit these taxes monthly as collection agents for the government.
Solving Problems with TaxStreem
TaxStreem addresses the struggles of Nigerian SMEs with record-keeping and tax compliance. By connecting business accounts to the platform, its AI engine automates bookkeeping, tax calculations, and filings with authorities. It also provides insights for better decision-making, all at a cost of ₦25,000 per month.
