Tinubu Stands Firm: New Tax Laws to Start January 1, 2026 Despite Public Objections
Tinubu: Tax Reforms to Proceed as Planned from 2026

President Bola Tinubu has firmly stated that Nigeria's newly reformed tax legislation will commence as scheduled on January 1, 2026, despite hearing objections from various segments of the public.

No Turning Back on Fiscal Reset

In a decisive statement released on the night of December 30, the President positioned the tax reforms as a critical, long-term project for the nation's economic health. He described the overhaul as a "once-in-a-generation opportunity" designed to establish a fair, competitive, and robust fiscal foundation for Nigeria.

The Presidency clarified that the implementation timeline remains unchanged. This includes laws that already became active on June 26, 2025, and the remaining acts set for the 2026 start date. Tinubu emphasised that the primary goal is not to increase the tax burden but to execute a structural reset of the system.

Addressing Public Concerns and Ensuring Due Process

The administration acknowledged the ongoing public debate regarding alleged adjustments to some provisions of the recently enacted laws. However, President Tinubu asserted that no substantial issue has been identified that would justify halting or disrupting the reform process.

"Absolute trust is built over time through making the right decisions, not through premature, reactive measures," the President's statement read, underscoring a commitment to steadfast, strategic governance.

He reiterated an unwavering dedication to due process and the integrity of laws already passed. The Presidency also pledged to collaborate closely with the National Assembly to ensure any legitimate concerns that arise are swiftly and effectively resolved.

A Call for Stakeholder Support

With the policy now in its delivery phase, President Tinubu issued a direct appeal to all stakeholders across the country. He urged them to support the crucial implementation stage of the reforms.

The final assurance from the Federal Government is that every action will be taken in the overriding public interest. The ultimate objective is to cultivate a modern tax system that fosters national prosperity and reinforces a shared sense of civic responsibility among all Nigerians.
