Prominent ethnic youth leaders from across Nigeria have expressed strong support for a recent court decision that paves the way for implementing a major new tax regime, describing the judgement as a win for the nation's long-term economic health.
Court Clears Path for Tax Reform Implementation
This development follows a legal challenge initiated by the Incorporated Trustees of African Initiative for Abuse Public Trustees. The group had filed a lawsuit against the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the President, the Attorney General of the Federation, the Senate President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the National Assembly. The suit raised concerns over alleged inconsistencies within the country's existing tax laws.
However, on Monday, the court delivered a decisive ruling. It directed the federal government, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), and the National Assembly to proceed with the launch and execution of the new tax framework. This regime is officially scheduled to commence on January 1, 2026.
Youth Leaders Hail Judgement as Progressive and Nationalistic
In a joint statement released on Tuesday, youth leaders representing major socio-cultural blocs—including Arewa, Ohanaeze, Oduduwa, Middle Belt, and South South groups—unanimously welcomed the court's verdict. The statement was signed by Mallam Kabiru Yusuf, the Joint Convener.
The leaders asserted that the judgement "has once again affirmed the independence of the judiciary and reinforced the rule of law." They further stated that it "reflects the collective aspiration of Nigerians for a fair, transparent, and sustainable fiscal system."
They positioned the new tax law as a crucial reform designed to boost government revenue, decrease excessive reliance on borrowing, and establish a more balanced economic structure for the benefit of current and future generations.
A Call for Unity and Support for the Reform
"The court ruling granting the go-ahead for the implementation of the new tax law is a victory for national interest over narrow political or sectional considerations," the youth leaders declared. "It is a popular decision that places Nigeria’s economic survival and growth above all else."
The statement urged all Nigerians, particularly the youth, to remain patient, law-abiding, and supportive of the reform process. It emphasized that meaningful economic transformation demands collective sacrifice and shared responsibility.
Furthermore, the leaders called on all stakeholders—including political actors, civil society organisations, and community leaders—to avoid spreading misinformation, incitement, or taking actions that could jeopardize the successful rollout of the new tax regime.
"The new tax law is not targeted at any group or region. Rather, it is designed to promote fairness, accountability, and national cohesion while providing government with the resources needed to deliver critical infrastructure and social services," the statement clarified.
Commending the federal government for pursuing economic reforms in the national interest, the ethnic youth leaders pledged their continued backing for policies aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s economy and securing a prosperous future for young people. They reaffirmed their commitment to peaceful advocacy and constructive dialogue, stressing that the country's renewed economic growth hinges on unity and the collective buy-in of all citizens.
