Akwa Ibom State has officially commenced its annual end-of-year celebrations with a significant push to elevate its profile as a premier tourism destination. Governor Umo Eno inaugurated the Christmas Unplugged 3.0, a vibrant 32-day festival, at the Christmas Village within Unity Park in Uyo.
Governor Eno Champions Tourism as Economic Pillar
Addressing the gathering at the launch ceremony, Governor Umo Eno positioned tourism as a central component of the state's economic development strategy. He pointed to strategic infrastructure developments, including the designation of Victor Attah International Airport as an international facility and the expansion of Ibom Air, as key factors that have enhanced the state's connectivity and appeal to visitors.
The Governor emphasised that Akwa Ibom is diligently developing its diverse attractions, ranging from the scenic hills in Itu and the serene beaches of Ibeno to the historical landmarks in Ikot Abasi. He described the Christmas Unplugged festival as a platform for all 31 local government areas to exhibit their unique cultural heritage, offering both residents and tourists weeks of entertainment, relaxation, and a taste of local cuisine.
Governor Eno extended a warm invitation to Nigerians and international guests to experience Akwa Ibom's renowned hospitality during the festive season. He assured everyone of a secure and seamless celebration, confirming that security agencies, medical teams, and logistics providers have been fully deployed to ensure safety.
Stakeholders Applaud Festival's Growth and Impact
The state's Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Anieti Udofia, thanked the Governor for his unwavering support for the sector. He noted that the Christmas Unplugged initiative has evolved into a major cultural brand for Akwa Ibom, strengthened by the government's ARISE Agenda.
Echoing this sentiment, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Udeme Otong, commended the Governor's drive in the tourism sector. He highlighted that such activities provide engagement for the youth and stimulate the local economy, pledging the legislature's support for tourism-focused proposals in the upcoming 2026 budget.
Sir Charles Udoh, the Governor's Delivery Advisor on Tourism, revealed that the festival stemmed from a vision conceived three years ago and has since grown into a significant cultural and economic event, boosting the entertainment, hospitality, and small-business sectors.
A Festive Kickoff and Community Participation
The Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in the state, Dr. Uwemedimo Udo, expressed confidence that this year's edition would surpass previous ones. He reaffirmed the commitment of all local government chairmen to collaborate for a successful festival.
In a related development, the Head of the State Civil Service, Mrs. Elsie Anietie Peters, welcomed the Governor's announcement of a 13th-month salary for workers. She stated that this gesture would enable civil servants to participate fully in the Christmas Unplugged 3.0 festivities.
The opening day was marked by a series of colourful performances, music, and cultural displays, effectively setting the tone for 32 days of celebration across Akwa Ibom State, further cementing its reputation as an emerging hub for cultural tourism in Nigeria.
