Oyo Group Warns Ibadan Mogajis Over Disrespectful Comments on Alaafin
Group Cautions Against Derogatory Utterances on Alaafin

A prominent socio-cultural organization in Oyo State has issued a stern warning against what it terms as derogatory comments and historical revisions targeting the revered stool of the Alaafin of Oyo. The group, Oyo Ni Wa Tooto, expressed deep concern over recent narratives from some Ibadan Mogajis, which it believes threaten the dignity and historical primacy of the Alaafin.

Clarification Over Royal Gathering Incident

The warning comes in the wake of a reported incident at a state government event in Ibadan on Monday, January 15, 2026. During the event, which was an interfaith gathering, the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, was alleged to have snubbed the Alaafin. This sparked a wave of commentary and speculation on social media regarding the relationship between the two royal fathers.

However, Oba Ladoja has firmly dispelled these claims. Speaking with journalists in Ibadan on Wednesday, January 16, 2026, the monarch described the allegation as a gross misunderstanding. He emphasized that his actions were neither intentional nor disrespectful, but were dictated by the circumstances of his late arrival and the existing seating protocol at the venue.

"There was no intention whatsoever," Oba Ladoja stated. "What happened was not deliberate. It has been misinterpreted, particularly on social media." He explained that he arrived slightly late and attempted to take his assigned seat quietly to avoid disrupting the proceedings.

Group Defends Alaafin's Historical Stature

In its statement signed by the Secretary, Asiwaju Sarafadeen, Oyo Ni Wa Tooto stressed that it observed with great concern the comments and write-ups from some Mogajis in Ibadan. The group asserted that these utterances challenged the status, dignity, and historical primacy of the Alaafin stool.

While affirming respect for all traditional institutions across Yorubaland, the group highlighted the unique and elevated position the Alaafin occupies in Yoruba history, culture, and socio-political evolution. "The stature of the Alaafin carries the full weight of Yoruba history, socio-political dynamics and cultural heritage," the statement read.

It further warned against toying with history, noting that careless narratives and distortions affect not only the foundation of society but also the soul of the people. The group called on the Mogajis to discard divisive narratives and instead uphold the values of respect, hierarchy, and unity that have long defined Yoruba traditions.

Call for Unity and Respect for Hierarchy

The organization urged Yoruba elders to consistently advocate for peace and progress rather than discord. It reiterated that the history and age-long customs of Oyo and its traditions are immutable and have survived the test of time, and thus cannot be invalidated by contemporary revisionism.

This development underscores the sensitive nature of royal protocols and historical hierarchies within Nigeria's rich cultural landscape. It also highlights the powerful role of social media in amplifying and sometimes distorting interpersonal interactions, even among the highest traditional authorities.

The event where the alleged snub occurred was the inauguration of the Oyo State Council of Obas by Governor Seyi Makinde. The inauguration took place at the House of Chiefs within the Secretariat in Ibadan. Present at the event were key figures including the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye, and the Chairman of the Council, Oba Rashidi Ladoja himself.
