Oke-Igbo Prepares for Oluoke's Coronation with Week-Long Festivities
The agrarian community of Oke-Igbo, located in the Ile-Oluji Local Council Area of Ondo State, is poised for a historic event as it prepares for the coronation of the 18th Oluoke. This momentous occasion follows years of legal battles and a prolonged vacancy on the ancestral throne, marking a definitive end to a succession crisis that had embroiled the kingdom in judicial controversies for several years.
Unveiling the Week-Long Schedule
According to a statement issued by High Chief Moshood Ogunlowo, chairman of the Central Working Group for the coronation committee, a week-long lineup of activities has been unveiled, scheduled to take place between April 20 and April 26, 2026. The festivities will kick off with a football competition at the Okeigbo Grammar School Playing Field, setting the tone for a series of events designed to build momentum toward the grand finale.
Other activities throughout the week will culminate in the installation of Oba Felix Adeoye Akintoye as the new monarch of the kingdom. The coronation is slated for April 25, 2026, and will be followed by a thanksgiving service on Sunday, April 26, 2026, to be held at St Luke’s Anglican Church in Okeigbo. This comprehensive schedule aims to celebrate the community's rich traditions and foster unity among residents.
Dignitaries and Official Endorsements
The special guest of honor for this historic occasion is Ondo State Governor, Hon. Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa. Dignitaries from across the country, including traditional rulers, government officials, and members of the public, are expected to grace the ceremony, highlighting the significance of this event in the region's cultural and political landscape.
In November 2025, Governor Aiyedatiwa presented the instrument of appointment and staff of office to Oba Akintoye, officially recognizing him as the new Oluoke of Oke-Igbo. During the presentation, the governor charged the monarch to promote peace, unity, and development in his domain, urging him to view his ascension as a call to service and an opportunity to foster harmony within the community.
Additionally, Alhaji Amidu Takuro, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, commended the governor's adherence to due process in the selection of Obas. He noted that the Executive Council approved Oba Adeoye's appointment on October 27, 2025, after verifying its conformity with Oke-Igbo's customs and traditions, ensuring a legitimate and culturally respectful transition of power.
Significance and Community Impact
This coronation not only resolves a protracted vacancy but also symbolizes a new chapter for Oke-Igbo, emphasizing the importance of traditional leadership in contemporary society. The week-long activities are expected to boost local engagement and showcase the community's vibrant cultural heritage, contributing to social cohesion and economic vitality in the region.
As Oke-Igbo gears up for this celebration, residents and observers alike anticipate a seamless and joyous event that honors the past while looking forward to a future of progress and unity under the new Oluoke's reign.
