Nigerian Priest Clarifies Viral Same-Sex Wedding Photos: 'Not a Catholic Church'
Priest Reacts to Viral Nigerian Man's Same-Sex Wedding Photos

Nigerian Catholic priest, Fr Kelvin Ugwu, has issued a strong clarification regarding widely circulated photographs showing a Nigerian man and his white partner exchanging vows in a church setting. The images, which trended over the weekend, led many social media users to mistakenly believe the ceremony was a same-sex marriage conducted within the Catholic Church.

Setting the Record Straight on the Viral Ceremony

In a detailed post on social media, Fr Ugwu moved swiftly to correct the record. He identified the individuals in the photos as Innocent Ndubuisi Okechukwu, a Nigerian composer and pianist, and his partner, a man named Greg. The priest was emphatic that the event did not take place in a Catholic parish.

He provided key facts, stating that the ceremony was held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Downers Grove, Illinois, USA. He explained that the Episcopal Church is part of the global Anglican Communion, which recognizes the Archbishop of Canterbury. The officiating minister was identified as Rev. Gregg Morris, the rector of that parish.

Contrasting Doctrines: Catholic vs. Episcopal Stances

Fr Ugwu highlighted the critical doctrinal difference between the two churches regarding same-sex unions. He pointed out that the Episcopal Church does permit its clergy to officiate same-sex marriages, a practice authorized by the denomination.

In stark contrast, he reiterated the Catholic Church's firm position. The Catholic Church frowns upon same-sex marriages, Fr Ugwu stated, adding a personal and definitive declaration that he would leave the church if it ever allowed such weddings.

Background of the Nigerian Groom

The priest also shared background information on Innocent Okechukwu, noting his Nigerian heritage and his musical career. He mentioned that Okechukwu had attended a Catholic minor seminary for his secondary education, where he was involved in music, but clarified that he never proceeded to a major seminary for priestly training. His partner, Greg, is described as a chorister and lector in their Episcopal church.

Fr Ugwu concluded his clarification with the hope that his points provided necessary context, signing off with the hashtag #PurestPurity. The incident has sparked conversations online regarding church doctrines, identity, and the spread of misinformation on social media platforms.
