Oluwami Dosunmu-Ogunbi, a daughter of Nigerian immigrants, has made history as the first Black woman to earn a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Robotics Engineering from the University of Michigan. The milestone was achieved during the university's College of Engineering convocation, where Dosunmu-Ogunbi delivered an inspiring address to fellow graduates.

Historic Achievement at Michigan

The University of Michigan's Robotics Department confirmed that Dosunmu-Ogunbi's doctoral degree marks a historic first for the institution. In a statement, the department noted that her academic journey exemplifies the transformative power of perseverance, as many doctoral students begin their studies without a defined endpoint but evolve into accomplished researchers through dedication and purpose.

Dosunmu-Ogunbi herself reflected on her path during the convocation ceremony, emphasizing the collective effort behind individual success. "I do not stand here on my own two feet alone. None of us got here by our individual merit alone, whether it be teachers, friends, family, mentors, or role models, we each have one or multiple people to whom we are grateful for making this moment possible," she said.

Inspiring Words from the Graduate

Beyond breaking barriers, Dosunmu-Ogunbi expressed her desire to be remembered for using engineering to positively impact society. "A Michigan Engineer is one who does not just provide scientific and technological leadership, but is also one who is intellectually curious, socially conscious, creates collaborative solutions to societal problems, and promotes an inclusive and innovative community of service for the common good," she stated.

She added, "We each have a solemn duty to make positive contributions to the world. Well, my reasons for becoming an engineer were initially frivolous, but they eventually moved into something more meaningful. I want to have a positive impact on the world."

A Legacy of Service and Leadership

Dosunmu-Ogunbi's impact extended beyond research. The University of Michigan's Robotics Department highlighted her role as an active community builder within the programme. She served as a Robotics outreach ambassador for three consecutive years, from 2021 to 2023, and received the College of Engineering's Martin Luther King Jr. Spirit Award for her mentorship and inspirational leadership.

Her academic accolades include finishing as runner-up in the College of Engineering's Three-Minute Thesis competition—a rigorous contest that challenges graduate students to present their research in just three minutes—and being inducted into the Bouchet Society, an honour society that recognizes outstanding scholarly achievement and promotes diversity in graduate education and academia.

Recognition and Awards

The Bouchet Society induction is particularly notable as it underscores Dosunmu-Ogunbi's commitment to both academic excellence and fostering inclusive environments. According to the university, the society selects individuals who exemplify the highest standards of scholarship and dedication to diversifying the academic pipeline.

Additionally, her runner-up finish in the Three-Minute Thesis competition demonstrated her ability to communicate complex research effectively to a broad audience—a skill essential for engineering leadership.

Future Plans

The Robotics Department revealed that Dosunmu-Ogunbi is currently interviewing for faculty positions as she prepares for the next stage of her academic career. Her journey from immigrant daughter to pioneering robotics researcher serves as a powerful example for aspiring engineers worldwide.
