The National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced the appointment of Hon. Lekan Fatodu as the new President of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation. This decision, approved by the Commission's leadership, marks a significant step in strengthening governance and accelerating development within Nigeria's sporting ecosystem. Fatodu, currently serving as Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), brings extensive experience in sports administration to his new role.
Strategic Appointment for Aquatic Sports
Fatodu's appointment comes at a time when stakeholders are demanding stronger structures, improved athlete pathways, and enhanced technical development in aquatic sports. The announcement was made by the Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, who emphasized that this move is part of broader efforts to reposition sports federations through capable leadership and institutional reforms. Industry observers view this as a strategic decision, given Fatodu's track record in driving reforms within Lagos State's sports ecosystem.
Fatodu's Track Record in Sports Administration
Since becoming Director General of the LSSC, Fatodu has championed initiatives focused on grassroots participation, talent discovery, sports infrastructure development, athlete welfare, and institutional partnerships. Under his leadership, Lagos has become one of Nigeria's most active sports development hubs, with deliberate investments in youth programs and sustainable talent pipelines. His appointment is expected to bring similar energy and strategic direction to aquatic sports, a sector with significant untapped potential.
Vision for Nigeria's Aquatic Sports
Speaking on his appointment, Fatodu described it as a call to service and a responsibility to advance another critical segment of Nigerian sports. He stated, "This appointment represents an opportunity to build stronger structures for aquatic sports development across the country. Our focus will be on creating pathways that identify talent early, strengthen coaching and technical capacity, improve competition opportunities, and ensure that Nigerian athletes can compete successfully on the continental and global stage." He emphasized that sustainable sports development requires systems, consistency, and collaboration.
Fatodu added that Nigeria's sporting future lies in deliberately nurturing young talents through organized programs that connect grassroots participation with elite performance. "Our objective must be to create a development model where every talented young Nigerian, regardless of location, has a realistic opportunity to discover, develop, and maximize his or her sporting potential. Aquatic sports offer tremendous possibilities, and we must work collectively to unlock them."
Alignment with NSC's Reforms
For the NSC, this appointment aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen federations through leadership capable of driving measurable outcomes, improving athlete performance, and enhancing Nigeria's international competitiveness. As preparations begin for a new chapter in aquatic sports administration, expectations are high. Many within the sports community believe this presents an opportunity to establish stronger foundations for growth, deepen grassroots participation, and position Nigerian aquatic athletes for greater success in continental and global competitions.
