A heavy rainstorm struck the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) main campus over the weekend, causing significant damage by tearing off roofs and uprooting numerous trees. The incident exposed several student hostels to harsh weather conditions and disrupted normal living activities on campus.
Affected Areas and Immediate Response
The storm impacted many parts of the university, with the most severe damage occurring at Awolowo and Isa Kaita hostels, where large sections of roofing were blown away. Additionally, many trees were uprooted, and large branches fell across campus roads, temporarily blocking movement in some areas.
UNN's Public Relations Officer, Inya Agha Egwu, confirmed the incident and stated that, fortunately, no fatalities have been reported. He noted that efforts are ongoing to assess the full extent of the damage. The university management has mobilized several units, including Works Services, the Taskforce on Environment, Security, the Directorate of Housing and Accommodations, and the Student Affairs Department, to clear affected roads and ensure the safety of students, staff, and visitors.
Repair and Restoration Plans
Egwu added that the university has begun a comprehensive assessment of the affected facilities to undertake urgent repairs and restoration. Alternative arrangements are being made to minimize inconvenience for students residing in the damaged hostels.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, expressed sympathy to those affected and assured the university community of management's commitment to their welfare, safety, and security. He has directed all relevant units to expedite remedial measures and restore normalcy as quickly as possible.
Egwu further stated, "The Vice-Chancellor appreciates staff and students for staying calm during the emergency. He urges everyone to remain calm, exercise caution around affected areas, and cooperate with officials carrying out recovery operations." Additional updates will be provided after further assessments of the storm's impact are completed.
