The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has directed Muslims across Nigeria to observe the Muharram crescent on Monday, June 15, 2026, to determine the start of the Islamic New Year 1448AH.
Muslims Urged to Participate in Moon Sighting
The directive was issued in a statement by Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sultanate Council, as reported by Vanguard. The Sultan, who also serves as President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, called on Muslims to look for the new moon after sunset on the 29th day of Zulhijjah 1447AH.
Verified sightings are to be reported through recognised traditional channels. Confirmed reports should be forwarded to District Heads or Village Heads, who will then transmit them to the Sultanate Council and the Sultan for authentication.
Significance of Muharram in Islam
Muharram is one of the four sacred months in Islam and marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar. The moon sighting exercise is a crucial religious practice that determines the start of the new month and, consequently, the Islamic New Year.
The Sultanate Council will make a formal announcement after reviewing and authenticating reports from across the country. The outcome will guide the official declaration of Muharram 1448AH in Nigeria.
Public Holidays for Islamic New Year
In related news, several countries have declared public holidays for the Islamic New Year. The United Arab Emirates has announced Monday, June 15, 2026, as a paid holiday for both public and private sector employees, giving many residents a three-day weekend. Other Muslim-majority nations, including Egypt and Oman, have also pre-declared the holiday.
Earlier this year, the UAE also announced Eid Al-Fitr holidays for 2026, which were observed from Thursday, March 19, to Sunday, March 22.
