The management of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) in Enugu State has officially dismissed reports of an imminent terrorist attack and mass abduction of students on its campus. The university's spokesperson, Agha Inya, made this known in a statement released on Sunday.
No Credible Threat
Mr Inya stated that there is no credible security intelligence or verified threat to the university that supports the claims circulating online. The rumors, which emerged last week, suggested that terrorists were planning a deadly attack and abduction of students. He emphasized that the information is unsubstantiated and should not be regarded as factual.
Precautionary Security Measures
Despite the lack of evidence, the university management has implemented additional precautionary measures to strengthen campus security. These include the deployment of personnel from the Nigerian Police Force and the Nigerian Army at key entry points to complement the efforts of the University Security Unit. Additionally, some access gates to the Nsukka campus will be temporarily closed to enhance monitoring and regulation of movement.
Ban on Motorcycle Operations
Mr Inya also announced an immediate suspension of motorcycle operations within the campus. No motorcycles will be permitted beyond the university gates except those belonging to authorized security personnel. Staff who commute on motorcycles are advised to park them at designated locations outside the campus perimeter before proceeding to their offices.
Assurance of Safety
The university management has assured students and staff of their safety amid the rumors. Mr Inya urged everyone to remain calm and continue their normal activities without fear. He advised parents, guardians, students, and staff against spreading unverified information that could create unnecessary anxiety, panic, or disruption.
While reiterating that there is no known threat, the spokesperson encouraged the university community to remain vigilant and security-conscious. Any suspicious person, movement, or activity should be promptly reported to the University Security Department or the nearest security agency. He stressed that security is a collective responsibility and cooperation from all stakeholders is essential to maintain the peaceful environment for which UNN is known.
Previous Rumors
This is not the first time such rumors have surfaced. In December last year, a video report claimed that armed Fulani bandits had settled near Maduka University in Enugu State, planning attacks. The university debunked that report, which alleged that bandits had set up about 38 camps near the institution.
