Moyinoluwa Ajayi, a 27-year-old scholar from Ondo State, completed her PhD in Mass Communication at Babcock University in July 2026, graduating with the highest Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.26 in her department. The three-time alumna earned her Bachelor's degree in 2019 at age 20, her Master's in 2022 at 23, and her doctorate this year. The top graduand recognition came as a surprise during the Hooding Ceremony on July 21, 2026, when a seatmate pointed out her name in the program brochure.
From Science Dreams to Communication Doctorate
Ajayi originally aspired to become a medical doctor. Her father supported this dream by stocking the house with science textbooks. When she was placed in the Arts class instead, she felt crushed. Reflecting on the experience, she told Legit.ng: "Looking back, I smile because I realize God was simply playing the long game with my life... He wasn't preparing me for a clinical coat; He was preparing me to become an Academic Doctor." She added that earning a PhD in Mass Communication proved that God elevates dreams rather than destroys them.
Academic Milestones at Babcock University
Ajayi's entire higher education took place at Babcock University, making her a proud three-time alumna. She completed her B.Sc. in Mass Communication in 2019, M.Sc. in 2022, and Ph.D. in 2026. "Earning my doctorate at age 27, before turning 30, is a milestone I hold with deep gratitude for God's divine timing and grace throughout my academic journey," she said.
Challenges During Research
Balancing doctorate studies with professional obligations was demanding. Her field research involved structured, in-depth qualitative interviews with key public relations officers across administrative bodies. Coordinating appointments, managing data transcription, and synthesizing communication frameworks required immense discipline. "There were many days filled with academic burnout, self-doubt, and exhaustion," Ajayi shared. "The hardest part was managing the mental toll, carrying heavy research expectations while maintaining high standards in my career." She emphasized that every obstacle refined her research methodology and taught her resilience.
Surprise Top Graduand Honor
At the Hooding Ceremony, Ajayi was exhausted and holding the program without reading it. Her seat partner tapped her and pointed out her name as the top PhD graduand in the Department of Mass Communication with a 4.26 CGPA. "I froze. When I confirmed it with my own eyes, an overwhelming surge of joy, relief, and gratitude washed over me," she recalled.
Future Goals as a Lecturer and PR Professional
Now a full-time Head of Public Relations and Marketing and an Adjunct Lecturer at Augustine University, Ilara-Epe, Lagos State, Ajayi plans to elevate strategic public relations, higher education administration, and academic research. She aims to bridge communication theories and practical media strategies across Africa and internationally. She is also actively publishing, expanding her creative writing portfolio, and mentoring young scholars.
