The United Kingdom has released updated guidance detailing how international students can extend their student visas to continue their studies in the country. The requirements include holding a valid Student or Tier 4 visa, having an unconditional offer from a licensed sponsor, and meeting academic progress standards.
Eligibility Criteria for Visa Extension
According to the UK government's guidance, applicants must already be in the UK on a valid Student visa or a Tier 4 (General) Student visa. They must intend to continue their current course or begin a new one. A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a licensed student sponsor is required, and most applicants must demonstrate academic progress.
Students who have been in the UK with a valid visa for less than 12 months must show they have sufficient funds to support themselves. Partners and children must submit separate applications, either simultaneously or before their existing visas expire.
Academic Progress Requirement and Exceptions
The guidance states that the new course should typically be at a higher academic level than the previous one. However, exceptions apply for students resitting exams, repeating modules, completing a PhD started under a prior visa, or extending for a work placement or study abroad program. In some cases, enrolling in a course at the same level but related to previous studies or career goals is allowed, provided it is at degree level or above at a Higher Education Provider.
Only three African nations—Botswana, Mauritius, and Tunisia—are exempt from submitting proof of funds upfront for Student and Child Student visas, as reported by Legit.ng.
