The Department for Education (DfE) has officially released the five key requirements that all applicants must satisfy to be considered for teacher training programs in England starting in 2026. The announcement comes amid ongoing efforts to address teacher shortages and maintain high standards in the profession. According to official data, England faces a shortage of approximately 30,000 teachers annually, making the new criteria critical for attracting qualified candidates.
First Condition: A Recognized University Degree
Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree from a recognized higher education institution. The degree can be in any subject, but those aspiring to teach at secondary level are expected to have a degree relevant to their chosen teaching subject. The DfE emphasizes that the degree must be classified as at least a 2:2 to be eligible.
Second Condition: GCSEs in English and Mathematics
Candidates must have achieved at least a grade C/4 in GCSE English and Mathematics. For primary school teaching, a GCSE in a science subject at the same grade is also mandatory. These requirements ensure that all trainee teachers possess foundational literacy and numeracy skills.
Third Condition: Professional Skills Tests
Although the professional skills tests were removed in 2020 for most routes, the new 2026 framework reintroduces a modified version focusing on digital literacy and classroom readiness. Applicants will need to pass an online assessment covering these areas before being accepted into a program.
Fourth Condition: Clear Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check
A enhanced DBS check is required to confirm that the applicant has no criminal convictions that would prevent them from working with children. This is a standard safeguarding measure for all education professionals in England.
Fifth Condition: Relevant Work Experience or Volunteering
Applicants must demonstrate at least 10 days of experience in a school setting, either through paid work or volunteering. This can include shadowing teachers, assisting in classrooms, or working in educational support roles. The experience helps ensure candidates have a realistic understanding of the teaching environment.
The DfE has stated that these conditions are designed to streamline the application process while maintaining rigorous standards. Teacher training providers will begin accepting applications based on these criteria from September 2025 for programs starting in 2026.
