The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released guidelines for the 2026 admission cycle, highlighting the most competitive courses in Nigerian universities. Each year, thousands of candidates compete for limited slots in programs with strong career prospects. Below are the top seven courses that require outstanding UTME scores and solid O'Level results.
1. Medicine and Surgery
Medicine and Surgery remains the most competitive course in Nigeria. It attracts a massive number of applicants annually, but admission slots are limited in most universities. Candidates must aim for a UTME score above 280 and have credits in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
2. Law
Law is highly sought after due to its prestige and wide career opportunities. Competition is intense across federal and state universities. The expected UTME cut-off is 270 or higher, with O'Level credits in English Language, Literature-in-English, Government or History, and other relevant subjects.
3. Pharmacy
Pharmacy attracts science students interested in healthcare and pharmaceutical research. It offers strong employment opportunities in hospitals, laboratories, and manufacturing firms. Candidates need a UTME score of 270 or above and credits in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
4. Nursing Science
Nursing Science has grown in popularity due to rising local and international demand for healthcare professionals. The expected UTME cut-off is 260 or higher, with O'Level credits in English Language, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics.
5. Accounting
Accounting remains a top choice for commercial students because of its relevance across industries and access to professional certifications like ICAN and ACCA. The UTME cut-off is 250 or above, with credits in English Language, Mathematics, Economics, Financial Accounting, and one other relevant subject.
6. Computer Science
The rapid growth of Nigeria's tech sector has made Computer Science highly competitive. Graduates find opportunities in software development, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and data analysis. Candidates need a UTME score of 250 or higher and credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Studies, and one other science or social science subject.
7. Economics
Economics attracts candidates interested in banking, finance, business management, and public policy. It remains competitive in many top universities. The expected UTME cut-off is 250 or above, with credits in English Language, Mathematics, Economics, and two other subjects like Government, Commerce, or Geography.
