Old Students Association Urges Government to Prioritize Girl-Child Education

The Manuwa Memorial Grammar School, Iju Odo Old Students Association (MMGSOSA) has made a strong appeal to the government to prioritize policies and infrastructure aimed at accelerating the education of the girl-child across Nigeria. This call was made during their annual reunion event, where the association emphasized the critical role of education in empowering young girls and fostering national development.

Emphasis on Boarding School System

National President of the association, Mrs Gbemisola Onasanya, represented by National Vice President Stephen Fasawe, highlighted the importance of the boarding school system in promoting girl-child education. She noted that boarding facilities provide a conducive learning environment, especially for girls in rural areas, by offering safety, stability, and access to educational resources. Onasanya disclosed that the association has initiated significant steps to restore the school's boarding facilities, which have been non-operational for nearly four decades, starting with the girls' hostel.

In response, the Ondo State government expressed delight at the association's efforts to prioritize the restoration of the boarding house system. The state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, while inaugurating a new Corpers Lodge built by the association for prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members posted to the school, urged other groups to emulate this example. He commended the old students for their dedication to improving educational infrastructure and supporting community development.

Appeal for Continued Government Support

Onasanya appealed to the government not to relent in its efforts to provide necessary infrastructure for teaching and learning in schools. She stressed that investments in education, particularly for girls, are essential for achieving sustainable development goals and reducing gender disparities. The association's initiatives include not only infrastructure projects but also advocacy for policy reforms that address barriers to girl-child education, such as cultural norms and economic challenges.

Reunion Activities and Awards

The annual reunion featured a variety of activities designed to engage students and alumni, including:

  • A quiz competition among students to promote academic excellence.
  • A health trek for abundant life, focusing on physical wellness.
  • A soul-lifting song service to foster spiritual growth.
  • The yearly general meeting to discuss association matters.
  • A thanksgiving service to celebrate achievements and blessings.

Additionally, the event included the presentation of Awards of Honour to some old students in recognition of their contributions to the upliftment of the college. These awards highlighted the ongoing commitment of alumni to supporting education and community initiatives.

The association's efforts underscore the vital role of public-private partnerships in enhancing educational outcomes and call for sustained government action to ensure every girl has access to quality education.
