Edo Government Vows to Prosecute Parents Over School Bullying Incident
In a decisive response to a viral bullying incident, the Edo State Government has announced plans to prosecute the parents of students involved in an assault at Igbinedion Education Centre, a private secondary school located in Benin City. This move follows widespread outrage and protests triggered by disturbing videos circulating online, which depicted senior students physically attacking their peers through beatings, floggings, and kicks.
Protests Erupt at School Premises
Yesterday, protesters organized under the banner of Concerned Citizens stormed the Igbinedion Education Centre to voice their strong displeasure over the bullying episode. Carrying placards with various inscriptions condemning the violence, they blocked the entrance gate to the school, demanding immediate action. In response, security was significantly beefed up around the premises to prevent the protesters from entering, highlighting the tense atmosphere surrounding the incident.
Government and School Management Take Action
The school management had earlier issued a statement confirming that the identified students involved in the bullying have been suspended. However, the Edo State Government, led by Governor Monday Okpebholo, has escalated the response by directing the state's Police Command to launch a thorough investigation into the matter. Commissioner for Information, Kassim Afegbua, described the incident as deeply troubling during an appearance on Channels Television's Sunrise Daily on Monday.
Afegbua expressed the administration's shock, stating, "It is quite disturbing when we heard it. We were just wondering what could have warranted this." He confirmed that the government has already moved to expel the students involved and has established a committee to get to the root of the matter, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards such behavior in educational institutions.
Legal Consequences for Parents
In a significant development, the government has pledged to prosecute the parents of the students implicated in the viral assault video. This step underscores a broader effort to hold guardians accountable for their children's actions and to deter future incidents of bullying in schools across Edo State. The announcement has sparked discussions on parental responsibility and the need for stricter enforcement of anti-bullying measures in Nigeria's education system.
As the investigation unfolds, stakeholders are calling for comprehensive reforms to ensure student safety and promote a culture of respect within schools. The incident at Igbinedion Education Centre serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing educational environments and the urgent need for collaborative efforts between authorities, schools, and communities to address violence and bullying effectively.
