Lagos Intensifies Crackdown on Unsafe School Buildings Following Inspections
The Lagos State Government has significantly ramped up its enforcement of structural integrity checks on school buildings throughout the state. This decisive action comes in response to the discovery of distressed and potentially dangerous structures within several public schools, prompting immediate safety measures.
Demolition at Mainland Senior High School
One of the primary sites of this initiative is the ongoing demolition of Mainland Senior High School located on Onayade Street in the Fadeyi area, within the Yaba Local Council Development Area. The demolition follows comprehensive structural integrity assessments that identified critical safety hazards.
Hakeem Smith, Chairman of the Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS), provided details during an inspection visit to the demolition site. He emphasized that the committee's core mandate is to ensure all public primary and secondary schools in Lagos meet safe and habitable learning standards.
Procedural Actions and Findings
Smith explained that during a routine inspection, a building initially marked for renovation was discovered to have been previously flagged for demolition but left standing. "As a standard procedure, we conducted structural integrity tests before taking any action," he stated. "The results showed that not only did the identified block require demolition, but another nearby structure also posed serious risks."
Consequently, two buildings are currently being demolished. However, one structure within the school compound will undergo rehabilitation to meet established safety standards. To facilitate the safe demolition process, all affected students have been temporarily relocated to nearby schools.
Future Construction and Safety Protocols
Looking ahead, Smith outlined plans to construct new classroom blocks to accommodate the growing student population. "We will assess the student population to determine the number of classrooms required. Once approvals are secured, construction is expected to be completed within nine months," he confirmed.
Furthermore, Smith stressed the committee's commitment to conducting integrity tests on all existing school buildings. He also noted that all new constructions will be built to meet international standards, which include proper soil testing and robust structural design.
Collaborative Efforts with Safety Advocates
In a related development, Adebayo Ogunrinde, Coordinator of the Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG) for the Yaba Cell, reiterated the organization's dedication to safeguarding lives by identifying and preventing structurally unsafe buildings in schools across Yaba.
Ogunrinde highlighted that the BCPG played a crucial whistle-blowing role by reporting their findings to the appropriate Lagos State agencies responsible for building safety. These agencies subsequently carried out official structural tests that validated the concerns.
"The primary mandate of the BCPG is to prevent building collapses by proactively identifying structures that pose risks to occupants," he noted. The Guild has partnered with SCRPS to extend similar inspections to other schools within Yaba, ensuring the safety of students, teachers, and staff members.
Ogunrinde declared a significant paradigm shift from reactive responses to proactive prevention. "We don't want to wait until a building collapses before we begin to act. Our goal is to prevent such incidents entirely, and not responding after the damage has been done," he asserted.
Community Endorsement
The Onisabe of Igboi-Sabi, Oba Adeyemi Adeniyi, expressed his satisfaction with the ongoing demolition of the abandoned buildings at Mainland Senior High School. He described the structures as a longstanding concern within his domain.
"I am so happy today that this building is gone. That building has been there for probably about six years abandoned. That building should have gone a long time ago," the traditional ruler stated, underscoring community support for the government's safety initiatives.
