The Nasarawa State Government has issued a stern warning to parents, threatening legal action against those who fail to send their children to school. This decisive move was announced during a major education summit held in the state capital.
Legal Action Against Defaulting Parents
Dr Kassim Muhammed-Kassim, the Executive Chairman of the Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), made the declaration on Thursday, December 4, 2025. He stated that the board is prepared to prosecute parents who neglect their duty to enroll their children in school. The chairman emphasized that basic education is a fundamental right for every child in the state, not a privilege.
He issued this warning while speaking at the opening of a one-day Education Summit organized by NSUBEB in Lafia. Dr Muhammed-Kassim explained that the summit's goal was to brainstorm on strategies to shape the future of basic education across all 13 local government areas of Nasarawa State.
Addressing Systemic Challenges
During the summit, the SUBEB chairman also highlighted critical challenges facing the education sector. He decried the persistent shortage of qualified teachers and raised concerns over illegal promotions within the system. To combat the issue of out-of-school children, the board has initiated a massive public enlightenment campaign.
The campaign will utilize town hall meetings and mass media to drive the message home. As part of this effort, NSUBEB has already purchased seven buses dedicated to the statewide sensitization campaign, aiming to ensure no child is left behind.
Governor Sule Announces Major Economic Project
Governor Abdullahi Sule, who declared the education summit open, simultaneously announced a significant economic development for the state. He revealed that arrangements have been finalized for the groundbreaking ceremony of a major industrial project.
A $90 million paper mill is set to be constructed in the Keffi Local Government Area, with the official groundbreaking scheduled for today, Friday, December 5, 2025. This project is expected to boost the local economy and create job opportunities.
The state government's dual announcement underscores a combined focus on human capital development through education and economic growth through industrial investment, marking a pivotal week for Nasarawa's policy direction.
