The Federal University of Lokoja (FUL) in Kogi State is enveloped in grief following the tragic death of a promising student. The university community lost Favour, a 200-level undergraduate studying Biotechnology, after she was bitten by a snake.
A Tragic Incident in Isao
The heartbreaking event took place on Thursday night, December 18, 2025. The student was at Itakeate Isao when the snake bite occurred. In a swift response to the emergency, she was immediately rushed to the Isanlu General Hospital for urgent medical treatment.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel and the urgency of the response, Favour could not be saved. The university's Students' Union Government (SUG) confirmed her passing in an official statement, describing the news as both painful and devastating.
University Community in Mourning
News of the young student's death spread rapidly across the FUL campus, triggering a wave of shock and profound sorrow. The statement, issued by the SUG Public Relations Officer, Comrade Baye, conveyed the collective heartbreak of students and staff.
"With deep pain and heavy hearts, we sadly announce the passing of Favour, a 200 Level student of Biotechnology," the statement read. It extended deep sympathy to her bereaved family, friends, classmates, and all her course mates in the Department of Biotechnology.
The SUG noted that this loss would be deeply felt throughout the entire university community, stating, "This loss is heartbreaking and difficult to accept. Our hearts go out to her family, friends, and course mates during this moment of grief."
Call for Calm and Improved Safety
In the wake of the tragedy, the Students' Union Government has called for unity and support among students as they navigate this period of mourning. Furthermore, the union has issued a crucial appeal to the university management and relevant authorities.
They are urging immediate attention to safety concerns within and around student residential areas to prevent such a devastating incident from recurring. The SUG's statement concluded with a prayer, "May God grant them strength, and may Favour's gentle soul rest in perfect peace."
